Beautiful Chapel Overlooking Lake Maggiore
Oct 2019
As part of our 14 day adventure in Italy, we arrived here not knowing what to expect. Aside from the fact the view is spectacular, the story behind this chapel is even more so, The descent of the 268 steps is quite spectacular and the chapel itself is awe inspiring. I will not bore you with the details but if you go to the web and search for Santa Caterina Del Sasso, you will get a full description of how this beautiful place came to be and the story within. Enjoy this stop.

#sunset at Santa Caterina
Oct 2019 • Friends
Going by car they may charge $5 to use the elevator and fee to enter to the eremo if you are not customer on the restaurant. The chapel is small but full of frescos and pieces of art.
The sunset here is breathtaking!

Easy Trip to Canta Caterina
Sep 2019
Very easy trip across the lake from Stresa to Santa Caterina. Not a tremendous amount to see, but we enjoyed the chapel very much. There is a park on top (take the elevator). We didn't stay there very long.

Picturesque Church On A Cliff
Aug 2019 • Couples
An enjoyable 15 minute ferry ride from Stresa, this beautiful clings to the rocky cliff face of lake Maggiore

It states that their are 80 steps from the ferry wharf to the church, but then there are another 240 steps to the top where you purchase the entry ticket, only to walk back down to enter the church

There is an easier way via lift that cost €1 per person each way

The church and it’s beautiful fresco’s are worth the trip

The buildings construction spanned the 14th and 15th century and this church is definitely worth the trip to see

There is a cafe at the top where you can have light refreshments

This is an absolutely beautiful church with nice frescos. The views from the church of the lake, surrounding mountains and the small islands are breathtaking.

It’s a small church
Jun 2019 • Couples
The public ferry cost €6.80 return from Stresa and takes 15 minute. The approach is very impressive. There are quite a few stairs to get up to the church grounds. Turn left for the church it right for the small garden. A newly build tunnel in the garden leads to a ‘James ‘Bond’ type tunnel which for a €1 takes you to the surface. The church itself is 14th century. You need to be silent in the church which creates an odd atmosphere as you cannot point out interesting things to your family or friends. There is a toilet but no cafe. Watch the ferry times as there is a two hour gap around midday. Otherwise they are every 30 minutes or so.

Very interesting go on a sunny day
May 2019 • Couples
The boat ride was fun and the entrance onto the island was easy going. I had a bad knee and was afraid it would be hard to get off the boat and walk the stairs up but they are in very good condition and has hand rails. It was worth it. The building are well kept and the art work is in very good condition. After seeing Santa Caterina we walked more steps up to the top and saw some of the area above. We had beautiful views of the area on a lovely day.

A beautiful religious monument to visit. The stair descent/ascent was non-challenging with my current fitness, but the walk is challenging. But well worth it.

Amazing view combined with spirituality of the monastery and serenity of the place. If you want to rest from everyday errands, relax and think of religious or non physical questions...
