The old bookshop in Flateyri is half a small museum and half a small shop. There is a small living room with a kitchen that is furnished like in the old days. We bought Icelandic sweets in the shop, which were really expensive but also very tasty. The owner tries to keep the shop alive with local products in addition to the books. We were delighted!

This is really interesting place but it’s a bit hidden. Not only is this a book store, but it’s an old book store that has preserved its authenticity. As a bonus you can view an apartment of the owner of the book store, it takes you 60-70 years in the past. Very interesting and a must see.

Looks cute but only open on Saturday. Website seems to be inaccurate anymore. Maybe it wi open up in the future. Unfortunately nothing else is in the town. We watched many people try to go in and walk away disappointed.

Hi, sorry ti hear that, we will be open from 1st. of june until 1st. of september the summer 2021. However there is a note on the window that ask people to give me a call if the want to visit the store at any other time. It would only have taken me 3 minutes to open the store for you if you had given me a call, as many people do every week, all year around. - Hope you have a nice trip in Iceland - Eyþór

I loved my visit to the old bookstore in Flateyri! It was a really nice surprise as I had not heard anyone discuss it even though I work at a travel agency in Iceland and have been for the last 6 years. You can really dive into the Icelandic culture by visiting with old posters on the walls, souvenirs and day-to-day objects all around! You can even visit the apartment next to the store which was owned by Jón, the founder of the store. Walking around the apartment is like stepping into a time machine that brings you back to the 1950s!

Part Icelandic bookstore, part living museum. Check it out if you're in town during the day if you want to see Icelandic literature first-hand.

The owner was charming. Just loved his take on life. The town was so lovely and quiet. We walked from one end to the other. All sorts of interesting buildings along the waterfront. Have a look in the museum.

This is a great place for book lovers to visit. It's belonged to the same family for more than 100 years and the owner has kept the house exactly as it would have been when his great-grandparents lived there. The shop is well stocked with books in Icelandic and English,as well as lovely books of photos of the area taken by the owner.Books are sold by weight!
The owner was so friendly and welcoming and was happy to answer questions and have photos taken .He even offered to post the card I bought which arrived home yesterday.
It's a glimpse of life in the past that you don't often see,and well worth stopping off to visit.

Bookstores are still very popular in Iceland. For a small town this is quite a large bookstore. There is a large collection of second hand books and even a section of books in English. The owner is very charming and friendly. We were told by our tour guide that some books are sold by the pound.
From the bookstore you can visit the merchants house museum for a fee of €5.

We travelled from Isafjordur to Búdadalur today, and decided to make a little stop at Flateyri to check out this store. We had no idea what to expect but boy did we make the right choice to stop here. The building is amazing, the old house of the hosts grandparents is truly amazing, better then any museum. It just feels so peacefull and authentic, like time hasn't touched the place. Also the host "Eythor" (If I spelled it correctly) is a truly amazing person, had a really nice conversation with him and he was just so humble and nice. This was one of the highlights of our trip, really really good. Will make sure to be back there on our next trip to the Westfjords!

This tiny old store is absoloutely worth the visit to this village! The quaint, bearded, bookseller who claims to have once been a famous footballer (and a sex-idol) is quite the character! He also claims to be a film maker, pirate, architecht, pizza-maker and many other things to numerous to count! I did not know if this guy came before Munchausen, or taught him, but seeing is beliveing!
