You cannot miss this road when travelling between Hue and Da Nang. Fingers crossed that you get to do it on a dry day with good visibility. Tremendous views and at its peak is the remains of the US military defences. Road was made "famous" by the Top Gear team and it's well worth its reputation. Cyclists and motorcyclists consider it a "rite of passage" to ride this road.

We passed through the Hai Van Pass (đèo Hải Vẫn) en route from Đà Nẵng to Huế. Our driver stopped at some places for us to take photos. We kind of wished we took the bike or did a bike tour through the pass because the scenery is just so breathtaking. Though I've read that the train ride is just as beautiful, I would recommend paying the extra to take a car or bike so that you can stop to take experience the nature.

We did this by train, but I think the road would be much better experience. Booked tickets on Baolau website thinking I had booked the right hand side of the train for the views. Train went backwards and our seats were backward on the opposite side, so that was not ideal. Windows were rather dirty so could not get great pictures and the toilet was revolting. The view is really nice just out of Da Nang about 30 minutes into the trip for about and hour and a bit.

On our way from Hue to Hoi An, the tour group I was with made a rest stop here. Great views, including that of beaches and the city of Da Nang. It was a bit cold and windy here, so a hot cup of Vietnamese coffee hit the spot.

The view was undone by heavy rain although we saw enough to rate it as 3.
Went in a car north to south so on the wrong side of the road to get the best views. Would definitely recommend south to north by car. Would be much better in a coach as you would be higher up

Just wow for the super views of the city and sea from the top of Hai VAn Pass. We rented a motor bike and drove to the pass. hilly and curvy roads, be careful, but worth seeing the panoramic view from the top.

We were driving between Hoi An and Hue following Highway No.1. Such scenery all the way. However the Hai Van Pass is a worthwhile place to stop. I believe Hai Van means Ocean Clouds and a very well deserved name it has; as thick cloud banks congregate over the peaks. There are great views from the viewing platform of the curve of the Danang Bay.

A drive from Hoi An to Hue will take you through Da Nang and on to winding roads with stunning views of historic beaches. A stop at Hai Van Pass and you have vistas and a few war remnants.

James was our driver and guide. Had him aswell the day before for the DMZ and tunnels the day before. His English is fantastic. Went to fishing lagoon which we stopped for lunch. Restaurant our in the water was busy! Best seafood we had! Prices were very cheap! Then off to pass. Was raining lightly, but when is it not. Fantastic views. Then to Da Nang and monkey island. Long day but private tour in his big Toyota Fortuner made the trip a dream.

If you have the opportunity, rent a bike and travel from Da Nang to Hue Via Hai Van pass. You will not regret it. beautiful views, to take your breath away. The pavement is good just stay away from trucks and you will do fine.
