An amazing experience going through the Carrapatelo Lock, both travelling upstream and downstream. The river cruise boat captains guide the boats in with inches to spare. The water level rises (or falls) 35m, with 190,000cubic metres of water flowing downstream each time the lock is used. This is used to generate hydroelectricity, so is not wasted.

We passed through the Carrapatelo Lock on the Douro River at 11:40 a.m. on May 26th as part of our Viking River Cruise on the Osfrid. With an elevation gain of 45 meters (115 feet), this is one of the highest locks in the world and the highest in Europe. This is the second of five locks that we passed through on this beautiful river. Boats like the Osfrid are built especially for them and there is only a clearance of 30 cm (one foot).

If one os on a cruise on the Douro, he will see this from the inside the locks- the only place to see this towering dam. WELL worth missing a shipboard activity, even meal to come out on deck and experience transiting this. The dorp is the second highest in Europe, if I remember correctly. Not sure I would drive to see it from above- the best perspective is from inside.

On a river cruise this is the second of 5 locks on the Douro River. Its spectacular for being so deep. Built in the 1960s. It was the first dam on the Douro River and now generates Hydroelectric Power. The navigation lock to the north side of the dam is about 85m long and 12m wide. The rise in water level is around 35m and it makes it the deepest lock in Europe and one of the deepest in the world. The downstream gate has a guillotine shape, 12m wide and 22m high. Inside the lock there are 8 mooring points which float at the internal water level so that they follow the boats as they go up or down. Not many craft could carry 70+ meter long ropes. Visible from the roadside but for the best view go through the lock in a boat.

A beyond excellence experience. Highest lock in Europe and with only 30 cm clearance on each side of the boat , we marvelled at the skill of the captain. Impressive experience

Having started a river cruise from Porto, the lock, "The Carrapatelo" is the second lock of five on the Douro.
Amazing engineering. It is apparently the largest & highest lock in the world, at 35 metres (or 115ft). Never been through this kind of lock in the past.
If you appreciate Waterwork engineering, you will love this trip.
When on a River Cruise, there is only space for the one boat in the lock.
Watch out for the free shower on the top deck!!

We were on the Douro River and this was the first lock we came across, it is 35 metres tall the boat has to pay 70 euros and each passenger is 0.70 euros per person

Never cruised on the Douro before. Other rivers we have sailed on have their interests but the Douro is so winding that you have to be on the sun deck all the time as the scenery changes at every bend in the river. Simply stunning. This lock is particularly awe inspiring even better than the locks on the Danube

At 115 ft supposedly the deepest lock in Europe. We saw it passing through on a ship but there is a road across so presumably it can be seem on shore. Though more impressive as a ship passes through.

The series of five locks on the Douro River are a credit to engineering expertise. Maybe I’m the one who has been living under a rock, but I never imagined that a river cruise ship could go through a lock and safely end up over 100’ higher or lower.

Our cruise of the Douro was downstream; this is truly remarkable and must be seen to be believed.
