Very thankful to my partner's colleague, who gifted us a coastal foraging experience with Denis. Denis is very knowledgeable, friendly, patient and fun to talk with.
He was very kind and understanding when I originally booked to do this coastal foraging experience two weeks prior, but had to postpone due to my flight had overbooked.
He is well prepared and took us around the area, sharing floral and fauna knowledge, as well as the areas history. It was also great where he welcomed discussions on things that we were all curious about. This is a great light activity if you wanted to achieve min. 5k step.
This was a therapeutic and satisfying experience. The mussels and cockles were quite meaty and of course, fresh, compared to the supermarkets. However, maybe I have bad posture, beware of your back when searching for cockles, and the time it requires to clean them before cooking. Due to how addictive it can be foraging, my partner and I had foraged a fair amount, but we managed to eat them all.
Thank you Denis for sharing your time and knowledge.
I highly recommend this coastal foraging experience with Denis.

Walking accross the tidal sands to Bartra Island on a glorious sunny day. Unspoilt beauty, wildlife, history and nature's bounty. What an adventure, such a wonderfully different experience. It will stay with me for a long time. Denis is a brilliant guide and easy company. I highly recommend this foraging tour. We are lucky to have such unspoilt gems still to be found. And to think this could have ended up as a private golf course! Lucky escape.

We did coastal foraging with Denis in June and what a fabulous experience it was. I can't believe I hadn't heard of it before. We had a 3 and a 5 year old with us and they had a ball. They loved the whole experience as did the adults! We saw so many crabs, frogs and seals as well as some little fish and plants. We foraged for cockles and mussels which the kids loved. The whole experience was fantastic - it's a great afternoon out. We've booked to do it again with our cousins in August.

Absolutely fantastic tour with Denis. We were guided safely at low tide out to Bartra Island where we saw seals on the beach, amazing wild flowers and foraged for cockles and mussels samphire and other sea plants. Very interesting and informative guide on the history of the local area. My 5 year old nephew loved it as well.

My friend and I and our four boys (ranging in age from 6 to 13) spent a brilliant afternoon foraging on Bartra Island and beyond with Denis from Wild Atlantic Cultural Tours. He issued us with our foraging kit (wellies and a spoon!) and we set off over the strand. The next few hours were truly amazing, probably the most unique and enjoyable afternoon I've spent in many a long year! We saw faery trees and learned how to find and pick cockles and mussels and even got to watch some basking seals. Denis answered all our often silly questions with great patience and was a mine of information on local flora and fauna. No mean feat to keep our noisy lot interested and enthusiastic for the afternoon but Denis managed it! And the cockles and mussels were amazing for dinner that evening! Can't wait to go back to Killala to do it again! Yvonne, Co Wicklow

Foraging on Bartra Island with Denis Quinn is one of the high points of the Memoir Tours experience. Our guests consistently comment that hiking on the tide flats, spooning for cockles, and harvesting mussels with Denis made their tour extra special. Our people love Denis; we love Denis and will continue featuring him on Memoir Tours.

Denis, the guide of the Wild Atlantic Cultural Tour, is someone passionate. He loves his country, know it very well. We made an instructive and passionate tour. We've seen most of the beautiful views which have to be seen around Killala ( Ross and Moyne abbeys, kilcummin point, Downpatrick head, ...). We made this visit with our little girl of 4. Denis was patient, show her things that could interested her.
Coming back in October 2015, we would made one more tour with Denis without hesitaion !!

My girlfriend and I went on a foraging tour with Denis in Killala and it was wicked!
Denis took us out onto one the most remote and rugged islands just off of Killala, which is only accessible during certain weeks of the month. The island is uninhabited, with only a single man-made structure in existence - if you want to get close to rugged nature this is a great spot to do so.
Denis's knowledge of the wildlife is unbelievable. He led us to forage mussels, cockles, samphire and many other ingredients, all of which we cooked that evening for dinner.
At one point we ascended a slope in the terrain only to come across a pair of seals and their pup on the other side, only about 30 meters away.
It's such a cool experience sustaining yourself with food you have foraged with your own hands, I would recommend it to anyone.
Really great and unique experience with a great, friendly host.

We had a fantastic day with Derek as he led us out to Bartra island. He has a great knowledge of the habitat, history and geography of the area , which he imparts so interestingly. Equally good for adults and children. We were close up to the seals. As a result of the fruitful foraging we had a feast of cockels, mussels and samphire that evening. Highly recommended.

A field trip with relaxed and froendly Denis Quinn means you can experence this ancient and rugged coast up close and personal. You only see 10% of the place from the car window but where do you go if you've never been here before? Denis is the man who knows. I DO live here and I took a trip and even I was amazed at what you see once you get off the road. Now I try to book Denis every time I have visitors and they are never disappointed. Spectacular views, hidden ancient structures older than Stonehenge or the pyramids. Cliff views that steal your breath away and secret beaches no one knows about. And he's an expert on the flora and fauna too, I even learned something about lichens!! Absolutely recommended - and by the end of it you'll have made a new friend too.
