Beautiful piece of history

It's a beautiful castle down the end of a lane we thought would never end. We went in the freezing month of November but it was fantastic to see and the views are amazing along the shore. Lots of little treasures to see in the area.

An adventure with a neat location, and beautiful setting.

Far away from anything else, but it sits on the shore with a stunning view. You have to drive down what amounts to a driveway, but Google maps got us there no problem. Really neat OPW site, although you can't go inside. The drive and view are worth it. Neat location, beautiful setting, and well kept grass. Kind of an adventure!

Off the beaten path - well worth finding and exploring
Sep 2018
This castle was great to see and being right on the bay, you can get some good photos. Turning off the road to Fanore, we drove our X-Trail down the narrow lane and parked at the gate into the castle. The drive itself is part of the experience! The castle is in reasonable condition and there is also a path down to the beach and rock pools. Definitely worth adding to your itinerary while in Ballyvaughan.

Too hard to find
May 2018 • Couples
We had this on our GPS and got to where it was supposed to be. It seemed we had to park at the road and walk down. But the trail we took ended at a graveyard. We could see the castle a ways beyond the graveyard, but no path seemed to continue to the castle. So we left and headed to Doolin for the Cliffs Boat Tour.

Great place to visit

Great place to visit, a bit off the beaten path. Not easy to find all the interesting parts without a guide.

Gleninagh is not a secret and for good reason. It is one of the better preserved Irish ruins on a large scale and set on 2 beautiful lakes. It is well designed to meet the tourist needs with some paved walks around the lower lake and a visitors center.. It handles crowds well and you probably will have crowds.

Hidden gem
Aug 2017 • Family
This place is difficult to find as it's down a rough track on the north side of the R477 between Ballyvaughan and Fanore. You will think you have gone the wrong way but when you reach the end of the track it's obvious that you haven't. There is a small parking area and then access is free. The castle is a single tower and is positioned to provide clear views across the Galway sound.

Nice view of castle and coastal backgound
Nov 2016 • Solo
I biked from Doolin to the Gleninaugh Castle. It was a beautiful ride along the coast road. Being Nov. most everything was closed, so I'd be sure to have water, snacks, or lunch. I did so I could take my time, and just enjoy. The only other visitors were the resident heifers, and they were great. By bike it was about 1hr 15mins (I stop for photo opportunities so I'm sure it could be done in an hour or less easily). Biking back has 1 decent uphill, and it's totally worth it for a great ride the whole way!
