The local family try to charge tourists but won’t tell them it is illegal to charge people to access public land (the beach is public land and you therefore have right of way.) simply do not bring money with you and tell them you have right of way. They will try and argue it but if you have no money there’s nothing they can do. Or just park on the road beside the car park. In terms of the beach itself, is not safe for swimming but Beautiful unspoilt beach and fabulous drive up past the assaranca waterfall.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 13, 2024
- nantucket1956Donegal Town, Ireland20 contributionsWonderful beach but beware illegal parking chargesBe prepared to meet a man demanding money to park. The new parking area has NO signage, ticket booth or resident staff. It was therefor a shock to be asked to pay for parking by a man who happened to be at his sheep shed at the top field. I had no idea who he was- he doesn't state he owns the car park! I have seen several people be accosted by this man and have had to return some way to their cars for money. This is illegal without clear or ANY signage to demand money so refuse! The beach is well worth a visit and some caves are still accessible at low tide but the car park charging is nefarious in the extreme!Visited April 2024Traveled soloWritten April 19, 2024
- jimmy dogsCavan, Ireland1 contributionLovely beach but don’t pay to parkLovely beach but do not pay the local looking to make a quick buck from anyone parking. It’s a public beach. Wouldn’t mind paying if it was done right. Not a bin in the park to dispose of dog poo bags etc. I didnt pay him anyway and told him where to go.Visited April 2024Traveled soloWritten April 21, 2024
- RHtravelsRocky Hill, Connecticut862 contributionsWonderful- Plan to visit at low tide to explore the cavesWe knew we would be driving by here as we made our way along the coast, so we checked the tide tables and planned our visit for low tide so we could easily enter the caves. It was fun to explore the caves instead of just looking out at more cliffs and beautiful views (lol). Too bad there weren't any shipwrecks (visit Inis Oírr) or treasure chests, but we had a great time imagining someone probably did hide out here. Allow for at least a few hours in good weather. We parked in the little lot next to the sheep field and I wish I had read the reviews that state you don't have to pay to park, but 3 Euros was a small price to pay for such an amazing experience.Visited July 2023Traveled with familyWritten April 28, 2024
- Ed L10 contributionsThink Patrick from sponge bob lives here. With the Rocks, caves and sand who would blame himYes there is a man looking for money for the car park. Who cares. The cost of the car park is so worth it. A massive beach, clean, clear water, sand that makes you want to build a sandcastle. Rocks to climb on, rocks to climb into. The sheep are still better climbers than me, but I made it to watch the sea. Needs a coffee van in one of the caves though just to finish the place off. Definitely a good spotVisited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 12, 2024

The carpark was private and charged a cash only fee of 3 euro. With no cash in the car (we're used to tapping everywhere these days) we had to leave. The road before the carpark is too narrow to park, and with small kids in the car, parking miles away was not an option. Really surprised a spot high on the tourist rankings in Donegal is operated in this way.

Nice beach with white sand and very close to the waterfall. We could not see the cave as the water was a bit high.
There is a person charging for parking when you arrive at the beach. There is no sign for the charge but the man is quite intimidating and follow you to the car to pay for 3 euros car park. Not sure if it is legal. Be aware!

The beach has a charged for car park ( 3 euros) collected by someone staffing it. There is a relatively short walk with good walking conditions to reach the dunes, however the main part of the beach is a trickier walk across very soft sand and dunes making walking difficult for anyone with mobility issues. Once on to the main beach it gets easier as the sand is a little firmer and easier to walk on. The caves are accessible in low tide although one was water filled with a pool when we went. The rock formations are pretty stunning and there are some sheltered areas which are great for windy days - just keep a close eye on the tide coming back in.

A gem. Loved it. Great sand dones for the children to run free.
Be careful 2 lads on way back were charging for car parking. These lads were walking the beach when we arrived. Came right up and asked for the money. No Hello or nothing. Looked to be in the late teens. When I ask for what as the sign said car park noting about the €3.00 he went to write down my reg.

The sand on the beach is like a flour. So white and soft. Caves are pretty big. In one of them there is a water so small towel is recommended to carry with you. Owner of the property is very kind to create a parking and toilets for the tourists. You have to pay for both but I find it reasonable price as there is no time limit and toilet is clean and it is private property so I do not understand negative reviews...

What a gorgeous spot on a sunny, breezy spring day! We went at low tide so we could walk around as many caves as possible. The dunes range from sea level to up and over the nearby hills - some of the most spectacular in Europe, mariners tell me. During late summer, this spot must be highly desirable, as the beach is long and very wide at low tide (perhaps not as accessible at high tide).

We visited this beach last week in glorious sunshine. The tide was out so we walked out to see the caves and watched people swimming in wonderful clear seawater pools. Beautiful views as we walked on pristine sand. We felt we were sharing a secret place because it was so empty!

Absolutely stunning beach & very high sand dunes. Fun to slide down as we couldn't find the path to ease us down to the beach.
We specifically went for low tide to try and catch the caves ~ we started with one of the furthest away caves but most still had some water in them but were fun to go in for a wee look.
For a free thing to do in the Emerald Isle ~I highly recommend ~ if it hadn't have been for the cold January breeze we could have told ourselves we were in the carribean! Absolutely gorgeous.
Sand dunes are fun too!
Easy to park & be sure to stop at the waterfall not far from the beach (you pass it coming down the one road).
And remember to take your rubbish!!

Hello. How is this place during summer? People can swim?
Written May 16, 2019
Amazing in summer, hidden away beach, its not manned by lifeguards so wouldn't recommend swimming personally, it's up to you!

Is this walk one that someone could do with a cane? Or is it too difficult and too far? Thanks
Written August 6, 2017
There is a sand dune you need you go through before you get to the beach which I found a bit difficult to get through. This would be the only issue really, but personally I wouldn't recommend it with a cane.

As far as I am aware you cannot camp here, in the 40 years that I have been coming here, I have never seen a tent. The nearest camping sites would be at Tramore, Rosbeg and Portnoo, both about 10 miles away (which isn't far in this part of the world!) Normally you would book in advance, both are found via google.

There is a parking lot at these coordinates:
54.762501, -8.527440
From there, walk up the road toward a lone farm house. When you get there, there will be a gate to your right. That is the entrance to the beach.
