We were staying at Ashford Castle in the beautiful village of Cong. Being a big fan of the Quiet Man I was astonished to learn that although most of the outside filming was in and around Cong, the bridge scene at the beginning is a 40 min drive from Cong to rural mountainous Connemara. We had a hire car and Google maps and found it! There is a sign post just beforehand too.
It felt really surreal seeing this bridge with the amazing view of Lough Corrib and mountains behind it.
Really happy we found it and I got my photos as a wonderful memory. Definitely worth a visit if a big Quiet Man fan!

Simply take N59 West from Galway, drive through Oughterard, and in about five miles you will see the Quiet Man Bridge sign, on the left side of the road. Turn left here and there's the bridge! (I posted a picture of the sign so you can't miss it.) One spot before and pass the bridge to park. If you are a movie fan, or a John Wayne fan, this is a must if you are in the area.

The "Quiet Man!" One of John Ford's best. My favorite movie of all time because of the actors, the story, the country. Barry Fitzgerald won an oscar for his role as the "match maker." Victor McLaglen also deserved an oscar as did Maureen O'Hara and John Wayne. It was a great moment for me to actually sit on the bridge where Wayne looked out and saw O'Hara for the first time. I also visited the pub (Cohan's) in the village of Cong. Visiting these site are all a part of my, "Bucket List!"

This bridge is just 30 seconds off the road, so it would be a pity to drive by and not stop to get photo of yourself or your friends perched on the bridge like John Wayne. It's a lovely spot to stop and stretch your legs.

It's a nice little bridge, with a lovely little stream. It's a nice photo op, especially if you are a fan of the movie. The only problem with the bridge is that after we stopped here, I really wanted to fight my brother-in-law.

Visited this place on our way to Cong from Galway. Headed out of Galway on N59 We did a loop through Oughterard. The bridge offers a good view of the surrounding hills and the small lake (lough). Stopped and spent about five minutes taking pictures and 30 minutes talking with some locals.

We have driven past the sign pointing down the road to the "Quiet Man Bridge" for years on our way out to Clifden from Galway. One year, we had a little extra time and decided to go see it.
We drove and drove down the road and passed a bridge .. but we were looking for a sign and saw none. Finally, we turned around and headed back. The way the road curved this way, we could see by the arches that this was, indeed, the famous Quiet Man Bridge. But where was the sign? We pulled over and got out of the car, walked to the bridge, looked over the edge .. and on the grass below the bridge was the sign.
We could just picture some annoyed neighbors ripping up the sign that said "Quiet Man Bridge" and throwing it UNDER the Quiet Man Bridge. I am not sure if it has been put back up or not, but if not, be aware that the famous Quiet Man Bridge is the first bridge you come to after you turn off on the road with the sign saying "Quiet Man Bridge."

Connemara where the movie with John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara made the Quiet Man was a dream come true. We had a wonderful guide tell us all about the village and the movie and several times on the tour of the town we the people from the CIEtour enacted a scene from the movie to the delight of all who were on the tour. It was great to see the home where they lived and to see John Wayne's coat and Maureen O'Haras green flowered dress and coat hanging on the bedroom door. I just had to touch them very lightly as I passed by. Had a great day visiting the town I even proposed to the Widow Tulleen that day. We had a great time and a lot of fun visiting the town One thing that stood out is all the hanging flower pots and hanging flower baskets under all the windows of buildings no matter where you traveled all over Ireland. The country is so clean and shows great pride in home ownership. No decrepit homes or garbage lying around on the properties. What a beautiful country no matter where you traveled

"The Quiet Man" was filmed in and around Cong, Co. Mayo in 1951. However, as is usual in the film world, some of the locations can be a bit removed from the central setting, and so it is with the iconic bridge scene, which actually took place in the townland of Leam, just west of Oughterard, Co. Galway. My family and I visited during a long weekend in my home town. It's a picturesque setting, very understated. The local council has recently installed a pad side car park, which can accommodate seven or eight vehicles, and a picnic table. Sitting on the bridge, and looking west, one can see the backdrop of the Maamturk mountains and a small lake in the foreground. There is also an information board giving details of the film, plus a piece about a famous local racehorse. There used to be a sign for the bridge but it seems to have disappeared, so look for the sign on the left saying "Léam" about five miles west of Oughterard on the N59.

Wife loves the old classics and "The Quiet Man" was one of her favorites. Spent a rainy day visiting Cong (Quiet Man Museum) and surrounding area looking for the bridge where John Wayne proposed to Maureen O'Hara and finally hit paydirt. Wife wanted a photo and I got soaked taking it BUT when the wife is happy ....well , you know the rest!!

It is away from Cong (where the Quiet Man museum is). It is a little past Oughterard on the way to Clifden (n59). There is a turnoff from the n59 signposted Leam. It's only a short distance from the turnoff.

The quiet man movie was made in Cong as far as I know with shots also in Connemara such as the quiet Man bridge. Cong to the north of Lough Corrib and is a pretty little village with good access to the lake.. Worth a trip.
