About
Based in Oughterard, Co. Galway – only 25 minutes north of Galway City at the “Gateway to Connemara”. Our Centre is located on the Rusheeny road, just outside the town of Oughterard, and is nestled between beautiful hills, mountains and the shores of Lough Corrib. We offer a full range of services including trekking, lessons, showjumping leagues, pony camps, breaking and training, livery and stud. For those interested in the native Connemara Pony, our yard has a large selection of Connemara ponies with champion showing, ridden and showjumping stallions at stud and the opportunity to hear about the history and development of this versatile pony from the yards owner, Roger Joyce. Roger is from a long line of Connemara breeders and stallion custodians. He is also an experienced horse and rider trainer and an international Connemara Pony Judge.

Can’t recommend booking a trek here highly enough. We had an amazing time and the scenery we saw was just so breathtaking. Must say a massive Thankyou to Lauren our guide who made us feel so welcome and with being inexperienced with horses ourselves she went above and beyond to help us making this experience the highlight of our holidays

Our guide was wonderful and chose terrain perfect for our level of experience. The horses were so wonderful I wanted to bring mine home but wasn't sure if he would fit in my carry on. Even though it was obvious they were busy training horses Lauren made us feel as though she had nothing else to do but show us the beautiful countryside.

I've been on a few "hacks" with Knockillaree Riding Centre and have to say they were great. The owner, Roger, was very laid back and nice but hugely knowledgeable and professional - he assessed our riding skills and, as I have riding experience, gave me a horse that suited my skills. My boyfriend, who has only ridden once or twice before, had a quieter horse that was perfect for him.

On one of hacks, we went up a quiet road and then through the brush, up to a point high on a hill overlooking Oughterard. You could see Lough Corrib, the Twelve Bens of Connemara (beautiful snow-capped mountains), and we could even see Ashford Castle in the distance! Another time, we went through a nature reserve forest, really lovely and peaceful, and you could get a good canter along the path. This also had great views of Lough Corrib.

The price was incredibly reasonable, and it's a lovely day out.

We enjoyed a hour trek today with our 5 year old daughter through the beautiful Connemara countryside. Roger was the perfect host, making us feel at ease (we are all novices!). If you are staying locally or even an hour away I would highly suggest this trek as it is the highlight of our trip and family memories we will treasure. Thank you to Roger, Emma and the team for a fabulous experience.

I rode three days in the center all on a Connemara pony, the first two days were the maintain walk, it is awesome to view the wonderful landscape on a horse with the story vividly told by Roger, the owner. On the third day, my horse guide and me cantered in the forest on our Connemara pony, the feeling is great, I was always thinking of cantering on a Connemara pony after I came to Ireland, only in this stable my dream came true, so thanks a lot for Roger to fulfill my dream, and also my horse guide, though still very young, is very professional in her job and very well communicated, if you are Connemara pony lover ,this stable is a must .

We are absolute beginners but Tom led us in a perfect way through the green ways and little creeks. Thank you for the nice trip. It was a birthday-gift for Carola...

We were really looked after by Roger who managed effortlessly to accommodate relatively inexperienced riders and more confident ones. Only 4 on the 2 hour trek and we saw peat bogs, lochs, islands, mountain vistas, ruins and streams. Horses were good fun and well matched to riders.

My boyfriend and I were the only people who had reserved a trek for this day. The guide was extremely friendly and knowledgeable about the surrounding area and the people, especially the history. He took us up a small mountain where we could see the beautiful landscape of Oughterard and outlying Connemara hills. Definitely worth the price for what you get! I wish I could go back again!

I had a great time riding by myself with an excellent guide and horse. I didn't have proper riding boots, so the whole crew went out of their way to make sure I had appropriate riding gear. Also, since I'm used to western riding, they helped me figure out an english tack setup.

The views on the trails were amazing! My guide even took a few pictures for me with my camera. I would highly recommend riding with Knockillaree Riding Centre!
