If in Howth, walk through old town, and make your way to the ruins. It is a sombre, moving experience, wandering through the graveyard, peering into the old structure. It would have been better to have private or group tours allowing entrance into the ruins.

I have been to Howth more than once and would not pass up this site. It's a bit inconvenient to get to so many casual tourists pass it by without even knowing it's there. The ruins and the cemetery are worth the uphill walk. But the view of the harbor and the boats from on high cannot be beat. Do this.

Well worth the walk up from the harbour area to the Howth town centre, if only to visit the old ruins and enjoy the great views of the harbour and boats.

It was a unique view of a cemetery, church ruin and the sea! Glad we drove by and took a few minutes to see it, although the gate was locked.

The ruins of the Abbey have been threatening to collapse to ground but are still there. All around is a wonderful sightseeing to the harbor, the sea and Ireland's Eye Island.
Many graves of families living around and a special mention for the O'Rourkes Family that might be related to the Irish Mexican Texan politician Beto O'Rourke.
And close to the place is the nice Abbey Tavern where you can pay a visit.

I have lived in Dublin all my life and regularly visit Howth and had seen the ruin of St Mary’s Church from the Harbour but never actually found it. Yesterday that changed, I was walking past the Abbey Tavern and saw a building that looked like a church with a plague for skin care specialist and as I turned around to walk away I spotted the gat to the cemetery .
And at the back of the cemetery is the ruin of the church. It is all behind a locked gate so entry was not possible.

We stumbled upon this old church and cemetary while returning from our Howth Cliff hike and spent a few minutes walking through. We found it very interesting and humbling.

After walking the cliff and hills out of Howth, I made sure to make a visit to the ruins of St. Mary's Abbey, situated on a hillside above the bay. With the sun shining brightly, the setting was stunning from the walkway above the abbey, with the graveyard in the foreground beneath the noble stone ruins.

There are some excellent tombstones on the grounds, which have a mixture of old and new plots. There are excellent vantage points from which to view the ruins, although sadly the abbey itself is locked up and can only be accessed with permission of the nearby parish (presumably for a formal tour). Nevertheless, this place is worth 30 minutes of your time to walk the peaceful grounds and appreciate its history and architecture.

Readily recognizable from the harbor, it is an easy walk up to the ruins and very worth the trip. The site is well cared for and offers a beautiful view of the harbor and town below. Still used as a graveyard, it is fascinating to imagine the importance this cathedral once served for the community.

We really enjoyed seeing this ruined abbey and exploring the cemetery in the grounds. Very sad to see the graves of so many children and interesting to see that whole families were buried together.
