The ferry ride across to Sherkin is only about 15 minutes, and the view of the village from the boat is wonderful. On Sherkin, the first thing you will see is the remains of a medieval friary. Stop at the Jolly Roger for a pint,...More

Sherkin Island is a little gem, only ten minutes by ferry from Baltimore. Fantastic scenery and beaches and one of the best little pubs I know, "The Jolly Roger" If you're in West Cork, take a trip out there; you wont be disappointed.

Took the ferry over and hiked all around the island on the well defined trails. The views from the Horseshoe loop were beautiful. It was a great way to spend a beautiful day.

Sherkin Island is well worth a visit to experience the natural beauty of the environment and some lovely beaches, in particular, Silver Strand. The economic hub of the island is a small shop where you can buy teas etc. at exorbitant prices ! We hired...More

Easy to get to with regular ferries from Baltimore. Lovely walks and views. Nice sheltered beach for swimming and sunbathing followed by food and drinks in one of the nice bars.

I found the boat trip a bit expensive considering how close Sherkin is to the shore, but the island itself must be visited if you are nearby. Beautiful walks. A gorgeous beach. Stunning views. And top it all off with a drink in the Jolly...More

Ignore the reviews that say this is dirty. This is a fab sailor's pub with a raft of gins to choose from. Great ambience and a really true grit pub. Lovely.

What a great place. A 10 minute ferry from Baltimore brings you to Sherkin. Only a few km long, Sherkin is home to about 100 people, many of them artists. Walk the lanes, pop onto the art studios, sit on the deserted sandy beaches and...More

A picnic for 2 - Sherkin Island? (1 Replies)
Hi, I am staying in Skibbereen for 2 nights in July and would like to plan a very quiet picnic for 2 - I think Sherkin Island looks ideal. 1. Would you agree with my choice? There must be endless choices in that part of the world. 2. If you've been to Sherkin Island - I can't work out if theres a path to Tra Ban beach or if its a case of walking across fields which might not be ideal. Any idea where I might find a half decent hiking trail map? Thanks for your help.

Sherkin sounds perfect for what you want. Sherkin has a paved road network, although it's generally very quiet. and you'd be unlucky to be passed by more than a couple of vehicles in the 30 minute walk to the area where the beaches are. I've been to Sherkin a number of times, but have to admit that I've never gone down to Trá Bán. It is only 20m off the main road, so all but the last bit should be OK. I can't imagine that there's not a path down to it. There are a couple of other...More
