The new tour of behind the scenes on Spike Island was amazing!!! We were so lucky to have Karl showing us around. His knowledge of the Island, his interaction with the people, his manner was just truly top class.
I would highly recommend people getting this tour. It was 100% worth every cent!

I didn’t know what to expect from the after hours tour but it didn’t disappoint! The tour was so interesting and the time flew. The island at night has a creepy vibe however it’s not a horror tour so don’t expect anyone to jump out and scare you. The islands history feels more eery at night which is what we were looking for and our tour guide enhanced this, he was great! The only downside was the indoor seating area in the cafe was closed at night so we had to sit outside but the hot chocolate was 10/10 so we warmed up quickly. Definitely dress for all weather just Incase!

Really enjoyed this trip to spike island with my family (all adults & 1 baby). Boat trip was only 10-15mins across.
Met by Karl who was a brilliant guide. He was so knowledgable and could answer any question posed. He let us loose then and wow there was so much to do. I’ll have to come back again to take in more and do the walk around the edge of the island. Highly recommend. Suitable for buggy too

I visited Spike last evening to partake in the centenary celebration of the successful escape by 7 republican prisoners. We were met by our guide John G on arrival who gave an excellent outline of the escape and fielded all questions from the group with admirable clarity. We were then led to the Gun Park where a detailed and riveting account of the men, their escape plan and execution of same along with their subsequent lives was given by the historian Mr.Tom O'Neill. A very poignant playing of Amhran Na Bfhian was given by a pipe band group.
This was followed by a visit to the site of the escape and the appreciation for the ingenuity of the plan and the added complexity of getting off a deep water Island.
As the mist descended one was left with a deep appreciation for these freedom fighters whose philosophy was that it was better to die on your feet than live on your knees.
John G summarized it well when he spoke of the of the great historical asset that Spike holds in preserving their memory so that we may never forget the debt of gratitude that we owe to these men in securing freedom for our country

It was an amazing experience to see and feel the history of this interesting island. The boat trip is lovely and the tour guide (Karl) told us in a entertaining and funny way a lot about what happens on that island. It would have been even more better if the guided tour continued inside the prison because there is so much to see.

Just back from a super behind-the-scenes tour of Spike island prison and fortress. The adventure begins with the short boat trip across to the Island. The whole area is steeped in history, which was outlined to us by our very knowledgeable and entertaining guide, Karl. I recommend a visit, whether a guided tour, or, which I am already planning, a leisurely stroll around.
