- Gillian SLimerick, Ireland1,284 contributionsIncredible ViewsThe drive up to Sheep’s Head is beautiful and you can’t imagine it can get any better but it does. The walk down to the lighthouse is incredible. It is a rocky walk in areas so I’d recommend having good footwear. It takes about 30 minutes there and 30 minutes back at a leisurely pace. We were lucky to have a lovely sunny day and we were there before 11 but by the time we were returning the crowds were building so I’d say go early to avoid the crowds.Visited August 2020Traveled as a coupleWritten August 6, 2020
- Caroline N3 contributionsGoats Path Pods and Farm ParkFantastic!!! Loved every second of our week in the pods. Home from home with everything you could need available. Great to have a shower in the pods and plenty of space inside for our family of four. Everything was spotless and new, beds comfy and plenty of space in the kitchenette, with a great size fridge with a freezer box also. The owners are the nicest people, so friendly and welcoming and had provided a fan and ice for us as it was the hottest day of the year when we arrived so that was really appreciated! Always lovely to have a chat with the owners during our stay who had so much time for everyone, they are locals so very knowledgeable about the area. The park itself is in the most beautiful location with stunning sea views from all the pods, lovely sitting at your own little picnic table in front of the pods and enjoying the mountains and the sea. The views from the top of the site are spectacular and not to be missed. It's a lovely walk up the hill and beyond with a really pretty lake also. The kids loved the fairy forest, which had loads of fairies and they have the sweetest animals onsite. We have never met such friendly goats, who love to be petted and also beautiful sheep with tiny newborn lambs as well as some cattle. The kids loved checking in with them daily! One of the best features is the little playground which is metres from the pods, so you can watch the kids play safely whilst relaxing at your pod. There is also table tennis available, a campers kitchen, a beautiful sensory room, a shop with great coffee and ice lollies etc and a communal campfire which is lit every evening. All in all we had a superb stay and would love to return, can't recommend this place highly enough!Visited July 2022Traveled with familyWritten July 26, 2022
- Charlie PMidleton, Ireland28 contributionsWorth a visit !Travelled there from Bantry last Saturday my partner and I. Scenic road from the beautiful village of Ahakista, getting very narrow towards the end of it. We were very pleasantly surprised by the charm of this place, we walked down as far as the tiny lighthouse which is a return sporty paced walk of just under the 50mn mark. The combined views of the adjacent northern and southern peninsulas are fantastic. There is the option of a longer walk in a loop shape that we couldn't do because of the more rugged terrain in some places that require walkers to wear proper hiking footwear that we didn't have. A must see place !Visited September 2020Written September 23, 2020
- louCorkMidleton, Ireland941 contributionswild and wonderfulThis is well worth a visit but you have to keep your nerve driving out this narrow road , there are plenty of passing places. We walked to see the light house, its says 2km but its rather up and down and rough terrain, you could do with sturdy shoes and a warm hat . But amazing viewsVisited September 2020Written September 16, 2020

Weather was good and although it was mid week there was still a fair amount of traffic but when we arrived the views were spectacular and well worth the drive. Nice little cafe for a coffee and plenty of seating to relax enjoy the scenery. If its a clear day this location is a mustVisited July 2022Written July 28, 2022
- graceohanlonDublin, Ireland29 contributionsStunningAbsolutely stunning location. The lighthouse loop walk is well worth it for the views of both sides of the peninsula, however it probably takes a bit longer than 1.5 hours as noted on the information signs. Nice little shop/cafe and toilets at the start of the walk.Visited August 2021Traveled as a coupleWritten August 20, 2021
- DvrDawgCork, Ireland228 contributionsGood Hike - Strong Winds - A RESTROOM!!This was an excellent hike. Our family did the hike out to the lighthouse during December. It was not too cold but was extremely windy. The wind was so strong that it nearly knocked my wife down on a few occasions. The hike is fairly easy with no extreme grades for very long. There may be a lot of steps for some once to the lighthouse but it was not bad. There is a place at the trailhead with a store and restrooms (something hard to find at some hiking places in Ireland). There is limited parking, so probably better to go early. There are some picnic tables at the trailhead where you can eat and admire the ocean views. I assume that, prior to Covid, that the store sells food but was not open when we hiked.Visited December 2020Written May 20, 2021
- Irish_Lights_UpDublin, Ireland137 contributionsA brilliant walkMake sure to pack your walking boots - the path out to the lighthouse is very even and well looked after, but the way back can be steep and uneven. That said, I really enjoyed the whole experience- you’ll be surprised by stunning views regularly on the way out and back. Grab a scone and a cuppa in the cafe after and drink in the views!Visited September 2020Written September 2, 2020

The views across Bantry Bay to the Beara Peninsula to one side and across to Mizen Head on the other were just magnificent. Some hairy roads but not too bad, take your time. Plenty of laybys to pull in for snaps. The road ends where the walk down to the lighthouse starts, an absolute must see. There are toilets there and a decent sized car park. It's a tough aul walk but we'll worth the rewards as the lighthouse affords wonderful views. On the Beara sides the views are better but on the Mizen side there are a few charming villages and restaurants. We had to park 3km from end because of motor home. We cycle to last car park. Long walk to lighthouse but so worthwhile. Very tall cliff and great views. Nice marked walks.

Do not miss this place if you are around the area. It's a long narrow drive up to it. When you get there there is a small coffee shop. It's a 2km trek out to the light house. Wear suitable footwear.. It can be slippy and rough terrain.
It's worth the walk out the views are spectacular and to get to the lighthouse at the end. It's just a special place.

The Sheeps Head Peninsula is one of Irelands hidden gems. Having travelled and hiked all over Ireland i have to say this is probably my favourite spot.
The scenery here is unspoilt and tourist traffic is low compared to some of the better known parts of Ireland. The walking and hiking is not difficult for the moderately fit and the trails are very well marked so there is little need for a map although it is helpful.
Much of the walk is along paved roads and well beaten trails and you are rewarded with stunning views at every turn.
Sturdy walking shoes are sufficient in summer and dry weather but parts of the trail can be muddy in winter or after rain. Some great photo opportunities with plenty of wildflife, i have spotted seals, otters and dophins on my walks on this peninsula.
There is plenty of accomodation on the peninsula itself or in the nearest large town, Bantry.

How long is the drive out and back?

It takes about 1 hour (possibly less depends on traffic) to drive to the end of the peninsula and similar back, assuming no stops.

My husband has a small mobility problem which would make climbing over fences and steep walking tracks a difficult task...I have seen in several reviews that it is possible to drive to the top of a hill to observe the ancient monument and beautiful views. Could you please inform me if this is correct & how I could access this area by car. Many thanks . Susan Lindsay

Hi
Ships Head is fantastic for cycling. We stayed there two time (as walkers) and always could watch cycling tourists making there way. The streets are calm with good ground, sometimes you have to climb little hills. On top the view is always stunning.
For dinner I recommend the Fish Kitchen in Bantry. We always stayed at the Seamount Farm, which is a quiet place and perfect for walking and cycling tours.
