If you are in the least interested in Books, and particularly if you appreciate the importance of retaining small, dedicated Bookshops (in face of the highly aggressive, impersonal Amazon & its ilk) you will really enjoy coming here, browsing, and - hopefully - making a purchase. This is one of our regular stopping-off points when we visit Clifden, as we've been doing for 50+ years, and did so again in late September, 2020. It's fair to say that, in such a small space, they offer a great selection, majoring on Irish literature and History, on West of Ireland lore + to-day's opportunities to explore the local environment, as well as stocking the latest most popular Fiction & Non-Fiction Books. For our part, reflecting all of the above, we bought (yet another!) Walking Guide, a Book of Seamus Heaney's "Best Poems", and a very recent publication covering the all too many sad events at the Football Association of Ireland (FAI). And, we should add, the young lady who dealt with our purchases on this occasion, was noticeably more pleasant than had been the case on a number of previous visits here.

This, as our Headline appropriately states in Irish, is a Top-Quality Bookshop : it's compact in size, but stocks an impressive range and offers an extremely welcoming atmosphere to Visitors and Locals alike - as well as providing an online service. The location for this little Gem is at the bottom-end of Clifden's Main Street, in what is arguably something of a "Cultural Quarter" : there are two Art Galleries a few doors away, the more impressive of which is probably "The Whitethorn" (which we will review separately). But, lest you feel that this neighbourhood is only for the culturally-inclined, there's an absolutely excellent Cafe ("Upstairs Downstairs") right next door to the Bookshop, offering great Coffee + a variety of tasty, moderately-priced Snacks. Aside from Artist's materials, and tasteful Greeting Cards & Stationery, "The Clifden Bookshop" offers the usual range of Fiction/Non-Fiction, but specialises in works on Connemara, Irish History & Biography, and, of course, Irish Literature - Maps & Guide-Books are also an essential part of their range. We've been here before, several times, and have always found the Owners to be most helpful and pleasant - they've run this delightful Bookshop for over 21 years, so they must be doing something special, in an age when, sadly, the "Online Giants" have extinguished many other traditional Bookstores. This year being the 100th Anniversary of the Transatlantic Crossing by Alcock & Brown, (whose historic flight ended in a crash-landing in a Bog close to Clifden, June 15th, 1919), we noted there were quite a few Books celebrating the occasion in prose, poetry & photographic form. For our part, we purchased another recently-published volume by someone who has played a significant part in more recent history in Ireland : a memoir by Seamus Mallon, the (now retired) veteran Northern Irish Politician, who played a key role in the affairs of that troubled territory, from the 1970s to the 1990s, bravely and consistently opposing violence throughout his distinguished career. We exchanged a few friendly words about our purchase with the Bookshop Owner, noting that one of Seamus Mallon's former colleagues in constitutional politics, Ivan Cooper, had been buried earlier that week. For sure, if you want to enjoy 15 minutes or more in what is a traditional, but totally up-to-date Bookshop, you should stop-by here, as we do any time we get to visit Clifden.

Stopped by looking for a book about Grace O'Malley the pirate queen of the Connemara. Asked the young lady and she took me over and right there was Grace O'Malley by Anne Chambers. Small place but exactly what you would expect in this cute Irish town.
