It takes about 45 minutes to walk from Kinsale all the way across the bridge and up the gentle hill that'll bring you to the fort. Very good hill if you are a beginner hiker! It's a beautiful peaceful area with plenty of sights to see, a great view of Charles Fort across the way. For parents with younger children, do be aware of some broken glass near the stone tunnels and the slippery steps if it's wet. There is also a secret small beach right beside it that is worth checking out on your way home. No toilets nearby (there is a pub but it wasn't open when I went)…

It's a small hike up to James fort, and there isn't much parking at the bottom. I was disappointed that it hasn't been given the same respect and care as Charlesfort of the other side of the bay. You can only see around the outside, unless of course you scale the wall to look over the top, it's been used as a dumping ground and for parties, which is a pity. The OPW should dtake care of it like they do Charlesfort.…

James Fort is near the beach in Kinsale.You can take an easy stroll from the Dock beach around the headland and wander at your own pace around the ruins. there isn't a guided tour but lots of info on boards.Nice to find such a place.

For those who like having a place to themselves, James Fort is for you - with a bit of luck. A gentle stroll uphill from the riverside and you are in a world apart; of grass, gorse and the grey stone remains of the fort. We briefly encountered one other family on our visit, but they soon disappeared leaving the place to us. A fine day is best for the views, particularly across the river to Charles Fort, but the mist that started coming down during our visit made it all the more atmospheric and memorable. A visit to the beach once you are back at the riverside is also highly recommended.…
