Excellent example of an ancient Friary and in a beautiful setting on the banks of the Moy.
Worth the diversion if you are travelling from Ballina to Killala as it is a fascinating and well preserved ruin (in that ruins can be well-preserved, you get my gist!)
We cycled and had the place to ourselves to take time to drink it in and imagine what life must have been like as a place of work and worship in the 15th century.
Highly recommended.

Not many signs,but headed to Rosserk via sat-nav. Passed Marys well on the way.

Located literally right on the water this old burnt out friary/monastic settlement is part of Irish history.The OPW did a nice job with several signs that give a very good history of the site.You can explore nearly all the site,except for the bell tower(gated for safety).

A Stop on a bike tour. This was yet another special place to explore that was clearly respected as it was clean and there was no trash (like I saw unfortunately at other touristy type places). You wonder how these people lived their lives as you explore and imagine what it all looked like when it was whole....

This is so worth the drive to explore and take pictures, so old but still standing. There are steps into the building and more steps to get to the second level.

This was a well-preserved ruin, sitting in a picturesque setting next to a quiet river. There was only one sign at the entrance, with some general information about the friary; we found no other signs anywhere that would give more information about the various rooms and locations within the complex. We did find some interesting and beautiful old carvings and it would have been nice to know more about them.
This is worth a stop; there is no admission fee, you can roam about as you please, and we were the only ones there so we don't imagine crowding is ever an issue. Due to the lack of much information on-site, however, I would recommend doing a little homework ahead of time, if possible, to make the visit more meaningful.

Rosserk Friary is well signposted on the Ballina-Killala road. it is a lovely peaceful spot to visit - as Yeats said "the peace comes dropping slow". The effects of the green pasture and the still waters will wash all your cares away. A lovely old stone ruin that is certainly worth a visit.

We really enjoyed our visit to Rosserk, and we were the only people there. We explored for about 45 minutes before heading down the road to St. Mary's Well. The ruins are surrounded by pastures, and you can hear the sheep and horses. The view of the water is beautiful, and it is a nice place to walk and reflect.

Rosserk is an impressive and well preserved Franciscan friary dating to the 15th century and situated on the Moy estuary in Killala Bay. An OPW official at the site filled us in with lots of information about the friary and the surrounding area. Rosserk is off the beaten track and we only discovered it while walking the Western Way. Liz from the Old Deanery also told us about the Holy Well, near Rosserk. This is a very charming area - the well is covered by a tiny chapel and is surrounded by stations of the cross. Water from the spring bubbles out under the wall of the chapel and amazingly a tree grows from the roof!

Rosserk Friary is not the biggest around, Moyne and Rathfran Abbeys are not far away and bigger. But Rosserk is easy to reach and very rewarding to visit.
You can drive up to the walls, one of the attractions already on the outside: the littel hole in the wall, where sick people could receive the sacrament without entering the church.
In the abbey you see the church with very rare stone carvings, some graves and high windows with a fabulous view of the River Moy.
Next to the church building the ruins of the monastery can be visited. Especially when you are there with children it is a great experience. You can pretend to live in the 15th century, climb stairways and look into chimneys. It has an enchanting atmosphere and lets you feel the old times. I tried the acoustics of the enclosed yard with a gregorian song, it is great!
