About
Located within the curtilage of Enniscoe House is the North Mayo Heritage Centre. The centre is dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich heritage of the region. It includes a Family History Research Unit, which provides a genealogy service for clients all over the world. The centre also has a small museum of unique domestic and agricultural artifacts from North Mayo, an exhibition area and a Victorian 3 acre walled organic garden. In addition, there are a number of looped walks around the woods of Enniscoe and an ornamental garden to enjoy. Disappointing
Aug 2020
The entrance and driveway to this centre was the worst ever. It was littered with craters of potholes all the way in. The surface on some the walks was very poor and in need of of serious upgrading

Just OK...

We arrived late in the day hoping to get to see more than we did. We thought it was too pricey just to see the gardens. So we opted to browse through the “free” part of the museum. Although the collection is small it is unique & put together nicely! Not sure it was really worth the drive out of our way but maybe if you’re into gardens more than we are, you may be willing to pay for it.

Must visit for Family research and more!

Made an appointment with one of their researchers, Brendan, prior to my to my trip. He was so helpful and provided a lot of valuable insight into the history of my family and was able to provide exact coordinates of where we could find my grandfather's childhood home. Finding the home he left so long ago was very important to my family and was certainly the highlight of our trip. They packaged a nice written account of the family history found through census, property and church records and was able to put it into historical and geographical context for us. The Heritage Center also offers a cafe which we found quite delicious and very friendly, as well as a beautiful garden you can stroll through and a small collection of historic farming equipment and other artifacts that give you a glimpse into life in rural Mayo many years ago. I definitely recommed stopping for an hour or so during your travels to take advantage of their research center and other offerings.

Was so looking forward to this but.........

We saw this place on the internet and loving gardens was thrilled to find out that there was a talk by the guy who had restored the garden over 20 years ago with the promise of a tour of the gardens afterwards. The talk started 25 mins late so had been sat on hard chairs for over an hour before we found this guy talking more about himself, his other projects and what not to do when restoring a garden. We walked out and went to see the garden expecting to see something special. What a shame. The boxus had been over trimmed and all but killed off, there was mares tail and Valeria selfset in every orifice. Dandelions in flower everywhere and the grass looked unkept and sorry. Yes, there are some lovely plants but not looked after at all. Every self seeding variety was out of control and even the laurels were going leggy over hedging and paths. We then left the formal garden and entered the vegetable garden which was a load of polly tunnels and plots covered in black plastic with cutch grass growing out of the wholes, ancient apple trees with boughs propped up with supports and weeds everywhere. This was not what was advertised or what I expected.

We visited following my correspondence with the Heritage Centre. The researchers have always been extremely helpful, and in person they could not have been better. My ancestor was head gardener on the estate in the 19th century. Hugh, the manager of the Heritage Centre, researcher Brendan, Enniscoe Estate owner Susan Kellett, and their team were fantastic, and I truly appreciate their welcome, their help, and their enthusiasm for this wonderful place. The house and grounds are beautiful, as are the woodland trails. I loved how ecologically friendly the walled gardens are, and the variety of plants and trees they have. There is also a lovely little museum and cafe. They have different special events throughout the year. I highly recommend a visit, especially if you are interested in North Mayo family history. Next year they are doing an exhibition on the people who’ve lived and worked on the estate through its history, so if you have an ancestor who was connected to it, be sure to contact them! :)

Family history research
Apr 2018
Visited this centre in April- the staff and research assistant were very helpful and understood the task ahead of me as I am attempting to trace my Irish family. Brendan Walsh and Trevor Ward are researchers at the centre and we were offered immediate help with our enquiries. They accessed material held in NZ for us as well.I will continue to contact them in the future.

Great place for a walk
Jul 2017 • Family
Unfortunately we arrived at almost 5 pm as the centre was closing, but the lovely lady at the desk told us we could still take the walk and gave us a handy little map.Loop walk 1 was about 45 minutes and just what we needed. Field forest lakeside, just what we needed

We were so happy to discover this gem in Mayo. Beautiful gardens, walks and tea room. We walked down to Lough Conn with fabulous views to Nephin. Interesting little museum as well.
