If you are staying in Grand Baie take a morning to tour the Model Ship factory Historic Marine by a short trip south by taxi. The model ships are all hand made at the plant which you can see being built by their skilled employees. You can also purchase a ship from their show room if you wish, you are not pressured in any way , they are very polite.

Very interesting visit. Model ships and boat are exposed in the showroom, you get to visit the manufacturing as well. The visit is free, but tipping is expected.

We visited this company 14 years ago and were knocked out by the amazing quality of the workmanship. Returning to Mauritius this February, we renewed our acquaintanceship by asking if it would be possible to have a model made of a ship on which my great grandfather was an officer in the mid1850's. Having found a couple of oil paintings on line and also the vessels vital statistics, we agreed a price and off they set to build my model. It arrived last week and it is stunning! The attention to detail is superb. They had never built a model of "Castle Huntly" before but the result is a testament to the skills of the company's model makers.

Never thought I'd end up looking at model boats but had a great time. Not something I would take home but well worth a look and fascinating models.

You wouldn't think a trip to a model ship making factory would be a riveting experience (excuse the pun!) but this was a fascinating hour's visit. You get chance to look around the workshops at the back of the display area and you can see the men and women busily working on the model ships. Each ship is completed by a single person from start to finish and can take up to 1500 hours to complete. Each model is a meticulous replica of the original - they have many famous ships, such as Endeavour, Victory and Santa Maria to name just three. If you're lucky enough to own your own boat they will make a model of it for you if you supply them with exact plans and pictures. Well worth a visit!

You get to go and meet the people who make these magnificent ships, the care, skill and dedication that goes into making them is immense. You are able to see each step of the ship making process which is amazing.

To see such a wonderful array of seagoing vessels of all categories reproduced in such fine detail and with such obvious loving skill is a privilege and something to treasure.
The front office staff are a perfect match for the dedicated factory workforce and are painstaking in providing an answer to all questions.

From the get go you are greeted by a staff who takes you on a tour of the factory. The staff who greeted us was absolutely lovely. She gave a lot of information and was very sweet. The factory itself is quite small but you get to see the workers in action and you see how hard they work and the attention to details. Then you are led to the gift shop which is beautiful it's huge and I think newly renovated. There are a lot of ship models on sale and the prices are not unreasonable for the amount of work put into making them. There are also globes, decorations and jewellery for sale. Beautiful place and excellent service

Great visit if you like model ships. They are all hand made and some take moths to complete. They are all built to scale and one person has resonsability for each model and ensuring they are perfect in every detail. They can made models to order but they are quite expensive due to all the work involved. Very interesting visit and worth a hour or so of your time
