Hi all,

Im planning to travel solo (female) to Valbone in November 2019.
How is the weather in November and is it safe to travel alone there?
Im planning to do a 2 day tour of Valbone with a tour company (choose balkans)

This park is open from May to October for summer hiking, climbing, etc and for the rest for winter hikes. I went from Shkoder to Valbone by a bus - koman ferry - bus to Valbone via Bajram Curri. I paid 15Euros for this entire trip, arranged by my hostel in Shkoder. The journey was beautiful. I stayed in the park for four days and hiked and climbed every day. The hiking possibilities are endless. Few important things. It is best to make one of the guesthouses offering camping facilities (if you want to camp) in Valbone village as your base and then go on day hikes ranging from 4 - 12 hours or longer if you want. Since there are no shops in Valbone, please buy all your food, provisions either from Shkoder or Bajram Curri. But you can prefer to eat at the guesthouse as well. Normally any decent guesthouse (and you will be spoiled for choices) offer bed plus all three meals for 25Euros per person per night. If you only camp and use the toilet bathroom and kitchen for your own cooking then it is 5Euro per person per night. I negotiated and paid 10 euros for breakfast and dinner plus camping. There are high end guesthouses too. I would recommend staying at the guesthouses nearer to the end of the road in case you wish to hike to the pass or going to Thethi, else camping / staying at Tahir's Cafe at Kukaj is ideal as you are very central to beginning of the best hikes in the area.

I hiked to Zla Kolata, Maja Rosit, Jezerces, etc. And also a rocky peak I won't recommend unless you are a pro rock climber. Tahir is very knowledgeable about the area and gives good information. Every guesthouse has a map. Most of the trails are now well marked. Perhaps best information you can get is from Catherine and Alfred who run the informative website about Valbone. The ideal months would be from May to August. In Sept I had two days of hard rain. But I hiked as I was well equipped with gore tex clothing and shoes. The food you get at the guesthouses are plenty and superbly delicious, all organic and home grown.

The tethi-valbona hike is nice bit there are also plenty of other nice hikes to do, for example to the Qafa e Rosit pass, see attached walking map (also available on maps.me). Alfred of Relindja hotel has more suggestions for hikes.

If you looking forward to swim alongside with endless flow of rubbish that is floating in the river and sunbathe surrounded by scattered smashed beer bottles and wripped plastic bags, hygiene items and cigarette packs- then welcome to Valbona National Park! The cleanest underground waters and picturesque views have been polluted with human increments, and all the locals are interested in is to grab your money in restaurants and cafes. Shocking views! The local government does not seem to do anything about the rubbish- appoling and depressing sights!

We knew Lake Komani would be stunning and it was. What surprised us was the benefit of travelling on the Dragobia (6am from Fierze, 9am from Komani). While slower than the car ferries..it offers a fascinating insight into the lives of those who live or work along the lake...pulling in at regular stops for passengers and goods. A lovely if down market way to travel. You can buy snacks and cold drinks on board. Recommended.

The Valbona-Teth trail is quite crowded during the summer, and it’s quite an easy walk for experienced hikers.

The usual package suggested by organisers looks as follows:
Day 1: Ferry cruise in the morning, arrival in Valbona at around 1pm, free afternoon.
Day 2: Valbona-Teth trail
Day 3: Teth-Shkodra

For trained hikers it would be easily feasible to walk the trail in the afternoon of Day 1 (without spending the night in Valbona). If you chose the 3-days formula it may make sense to look on how to extend the hike by avoiding the most beaten path, but beware that the Albanian Alps are quite wild and the weather unpredictable.

We went two families with young children. The mountains, the valley, the river are the perfect combination (all at one place) to get out of the busy life of the capital city. We did a trip to the mountain and had a very nice lunch with traditional food. Really fun. Highly recommended
