In 30 years of fly-fishing, there is only one guide to whom I have returned time and again to chase trout, Ivan Tarin and his team at Salvelinus. The Pyrenees of northern Spain never fail to both calm and invigorate (worries of the city disappear before I get my waders on). It is storybook fishing, especially in the high mountains. Professional and impressively attuned to the full client experience, Ivan and his team put you on fish during the day and celebrate the best of the region's food and wine at night. The guides know their craft, and importantly, they know how and when to share it so that you not only put fish in the net, but also hone your technique along the way. Each of my four trips with Salvelinus, including a hosted trip to South America, has left me a better fisherman, eager to return. Whether you are a dry fly purist or thrilled chasing lunkers on streamers and nymphs, Salvelinus will put you on fish and leave you with a lifetime of memories.

From what would be a highly recommended experience, which, both in the fishing and gastronomic fields, has very pleasantly surprised us, it has become something outstanding for the close treatment and professionalism of the two guides, both Carlos and Aleix. , who at all times were attentive to the smallest detail both inside and outside the rivers. highly recommended. Thank you for everything, we will see you again soon.

I was looking for a fly fishing destination that my non-angling wife would enjoy. Ken Moorish, at Fly Water Travel, suggested we take a look at Salvelinus, in Spain. He nailed it! This trip exceeded all of our expectations by a mile. Ivan has put together a world class operation, from the guides to the lodge/kitchen staff. My wife's itinerary was varied and she was amazed every day. The fishing guides put together a custom program every day, based on our goals (for me Zebra Trout) and local conditions. Our success was their goal and it was a very good week. The local and regional history was shared and their passion for their Basque homeland was infectious. The food was some of the best we had, for our entire trip, which started in Barcelona and ended in Bilbao and San Sebastian. Truly outstanding. Beautiful location, wonderful people, excellent fishing, flexible itineraries and new friends. Thank you to Ivan and his entire staff for making this such a memorable trip.

I’m speechless after our experience here. Beyond our wildest expectations! Ivan and his guides were amazing and the scenery of this area is breathtaking. We were two couples. The husbands fished and our wives had activities everyday that were indescribable. We have never been treated like kings and queens as we were during our stay there. Truly the food was unreal. We all agreed that several of the meals we had were in the top five meals we’ve had in our lives. I could go on and on, and I’m not someone that writes reviews, but do yourself a favor and experience this amazing place and people. We will be back for certain!

went for 2 days trout fishing with salvelinus in the western pyrenees near Jaca.
all superb. stunning setting, beautiful high mountain streams, gin clear water, and small, wild, mountain trout - albeit there are clearly big fish about. ivan is passionate about flyfishing for trout, and his knowledge, experience, and passion abound; i learnt masses, and left with an appetite to return as soon as possible.
additionally, the logistics were perfect - the lodge, food, travel from one place to the next, licences, etc.
highly recommended. check out the webpage

I went to Spain with my wife and son. I expected to fish in a new location, catching a new species, enjoying good fishing, and eating some good food. I ended up with a life changing experience. My son is forever changed -- for the good!
Everything I could have hoped for in regards to the trip and with my son came true!
I wanted him to gain independence and try new food and experiences -- he did!
I wanted him to learn new types of fishing and learn new techniques -- he did!
I wanted him to catch a few good fish while missing many more (so he keeps coming back to the river) -- he did!
Most importantly, I wanted him to grasp a love of the sport of fly fishing -- he has and continues to! Since we have been home, he has picked up the book, "The Old Man & the Sea" because his guide Terrance suggested it. My son always liked to fish, now he LOVES it. On the plane home, he asked when can we fly fish again (season is closed where we live) and when can we go back to Spain to fish!
As for my wife and I, we now have new lifelong friends. Ivan, Pierre, Terrance, Lur, Juan Antonio and the entire city of Aren are part of our soul.
My wife truly enjoyed her tailor made itinerary. She experienced parts of the Spanish countryside and culture she would have never considered had it not been for my fly fishing obsession. Combine that with Ivan's absolute demand for perfection in planning and execution, you end up with an extremely happy wife!
The food and drink?! Dear lord! Juan Antonio is not only one of the finest gentlemen I have met, he also creates food that only that made me feel nearly unworthy! A hint: get his gin and tonic!
The fishing? Let's just say, there's a little something for everyone! Tell Ivan what you want and he'll do his best to organize and plan for your desires and needs. Pierre (my guide) worked tirelessly for me and my son -- he is a true friend who made me feel at ease at all times. Pierre read my cues of what I wanted and delivered on every level! Terrance worked with my boy Elan and his patience and teaching is truly the stuff of angels. Suffice it to say, I am a fly fisherman and do not "kiss and tell" -- the best you'll get from me is... we did well, very well :)
Lastly, I will share an anecdote form one of our days out. My ten year old fished in the am with me and Pierre but decided to go back to the city of Aren for the afternoon. Assuming my wife would have to deal with watching him, I perhaps acted a bit selfishly as Pierre took me to a relatively secret and physically demanding area. We got back to the hotel at 9pm only to find my son tying fishing knots with Terrance! He had played soccer with Terrance, tied his first fly, made sure it floated in the jacuzzi, and then were discussing fishing knots, techniques, and stories! My wife had her massage and never even batted an eyelash! This is NOT normal -- these people are unreal and I cannot say enough about the operation!
A sincere thank you to all that work at Salvelinus!

I admit it: I traveled to the Spanish Pyrenees as a skeptic. After all, I'd never heard anyone say that Spain has great fly fishing for trout. But my week with Ivan Tarin and Salvelinus Fishing Adventures opened my eyes to the incredible fishery to be found in the heart of the Old World. We fished all kinds of water—from high mountain streams to low-country rivers to lakes—in some of the most beautiful settings imaginable. Better yet, we caught plenty of good trout. The opportunity to catch "striped" brown trout in their native streams was especially exciting for this wild-trout nut, but I also enjoyed the rainbows, "regular" browns, and even brook trout. Everything about the trip, including the quality of the guides, exceeded my expectations, and I'm already thinking about how I can return to sample more of the eighty-plus waters that Salvelinus fishes.

The fishing is outstanding, from jewel-like trout in mountain streams, to big fish in big rivers. The scenery is exquisite. The food was absolutely fantastic - local produce, local wines, local cheeses, all of which is included in the package. Ivan and his staff are terrific guides and good company as well. My wife, who doesn't fish, had as good a time as I did. Salvelinus is one of the only outfitters in my experience that offers as good a program to the non-angler as it does to the angler. There is so much water to fish in the Pyrenees that one can fish a different stream, river, or lake every day for the entire season.

I just returned from a five-day, four-night fly fishing trip in the eastern Pyrenees with Salvelinus. I wasn't sure what to expect but it was one of the best fishing trips I've ever experienced. Great fishing on mountain streams and rivers (a different place every day), a terrific young guide named Aitor and some of the best Spanish food and wine I've ever had. The water levels were high at times due to a warm spring, but Aitor and the other guides managed to find good, safe spots and lots of wild trout.
The small hotel is in the hillside village of Aren (population: around 150) and was very comfortable. Meals are served at a nearby restaurant with enormous portions and exceptional quality. Everything is included and Ivan Tarin, who runs Salvelinus, goes all out for his guests, and even gave me a private casting lesson.
I highly recommend Salvelinus.

On the recommendation of another guide group I used Salvelinus. It was a side trip from Madrid which consisted of a 2 hour bullet train ride to Lleida and about a 45 minute drive to the hotel, with another 45 minute drive to the river each day. This is a first class operation from beginning to end. Aitor my guide and chaperone throughout the trip was awesome. He picked me up at the train and took me to my hotel for the night. All arraignments from train, car and hotel were done by Salvelinus. All food and drink "of my choosing" was provided throughout the trip. While we were not deep into the Pyrenees, we were in an area I would compare to the foothills of say the rockies in the USA. The river we fished had a variety of brown's and rainbow's and was truly spectacular. We fished about 6 different sections of the river, each with it's own unique characteristics and scenery. Since it was offseason Ivan (owner of the service) allowed me a little flexibility in the amount of days, I only had a 2 days available, so I only fished 2 days. Aitor was one of the most knowledgeable, easy going and attentive guides I've ever had. I caught fish with him that I never in my life would have expected to, and it was challenging. While not cheap, which I figured out was due to the many Spanish/EU regulations/requirements it was an incredible trip, (as you can see by the photo's) and I hope to do it again in the future.
