The trip is a breathtaking dip into the mountains, taking you away from everyday life and bringing you back in history with the charming old little trains and the simple and pure lifestyle of the locals. You can meet interesting people, hear their stories, even have someone to listen to yours... The train passes a scenic route, climbing and descending... More

Good break from skiing. We took our lunch and travelled from Bansko to septemvri and back. It was very quaint. A good way to see the Bulgarian landscape, with picturesque forest last and frozen waterfalls. Not luxury but good for people watching and comfortable We really enjoyed our trip and would recommend for those not in any hurry to get... More

Train enthusiasts - this one's for you. Narrow gauge railway between Septemvri and Dobrinishte. Takes a long time with stops in two stations where you wait to pass the trains coming the other way. Quaint old fashioned carriages. Whole journey takes about 5 hours but goes through stunning mountain scenery and passes through interesting villages and towns, including Velingrad, a... More

While staying at Bansko, thought it was a must to try this railway and travel as far as Valingrad, just to get the feel of the area. As the snow had been light and skiing was only for the experienced on the upper slopes, we took to the train. Our first gasp was at the price, less than four pound... More

Great way to see the country. We picked a sunny day and the scenery through the hills on an Autumn day was stunning. It is a train for the locals so only Bulgarian spoken. It was difficult to get prices and times etc as very little info for tourists. We were lucky our hotel went on the Bulgarian web site... More

I caught the 6.30am express train from Sofia central railway station, having paid just 5 leva for a taxi from my hotel near the cathedral. I could have taken the metro for just 1 lev, since that starts at 5am. Even at 6am, the railway station had quite a few people waiting for trains. There was at least one shop... More

Done the trip 2nd March. Came from Sophia on the express train - fare 8.5 lev including upgrade to first class. Then a couple of beers in Septemvri whilst waiting for the Bansko train. Bought the tickets for this leg - an amazing 6.1 lev - for the almost five hour journey. After an hour or so stopped at a... More

Drove to Velingrad. Had lunch. Came back by train. Cheap. 7lev for 3 hours. The carriages were clean, warm and comfortable. It stopped a lot of remote ruined halts. At one a gypsy was sitting in an open sided shelter with an open fire. The scenery was spectacular. Lots of snow. In summer the leaves will restrict views.

Took the railway whilst staying in Bansko. Our hotel booked a taxi to leave at 9.30am to Septemvri which was a very pleasant 2 hour drive through mountain forests. The very happy taxi driver spoke very little English (we have no Bulgarian) kept us entertained and informed on the trip. The taxi cost a very reasonable 100 lev (around £37). We arrived... More
