Impressive CV

Set in Spa Gardens the statue of G F Samuel and the inscription on the back gives you some insight into the roles that movers and shakers of the day took including minister for war and viceroy of India, I don’t know much about the man but this has certainly made we want to find out more

This is an imposing statue in the Spa gardens and reading the information on its base gave me a good background as to who this guy was

Typical Victorian Statue

Admittedly I had never heard of the guy but it appears he had several influential posts in his lifetime. I found the architecture of the Spa Baths next door far more interesting

Very Large Park Statue

This statue of the Marquis of Ripon stands proud as you enter the Spa Gardens, the statue itself is very well featured and has good information around the plinth.
Worth having a look and read if you are in the park.

Average statue of a rather impressive man.

Generally speaking I pay scant attention to town centre statues, and only looked at this one as it was listed as an attraction on Trip Advisor and, as statues go, it has to be said that this one is pretty typical of the genre and rather unremarkable.

The same cannot be said of the subject however and a look at the inscription reveals that The Most Honourable George Frederick Samuel had a most impressive CV. In addition to being Mayor of Ripon, this chap managed to fit in being:

Secretary of State for War
Secretary of State for India
First High Commissioner to the United States
Viceroy of India
First Lord of the Admiralty
Lord Privy Seal
Grand Master of the Masons
and several other worthy positions.

Wonder what he did on his time off?

Now - as far as statues go - call me an artistic Philistine if you like, but I prefer the carving further round the path, where someone turned a tree into a splendid statue cum climbing frame of Alice and the various people she met in wonderland. It's a lovely piece.

Lovely statue in the gardens
Mar 2017 • Couples
This statue is close to the cenotaph in Ripon set within the grounds of the Spa Gardens. There is a small trail round the gardens for children along with crazy golf and a lovely little cafe.

Spa Garden Statue
Nov 2016 • Couples
We visited the Spa Gardens in Ripon and the first thing you see as you enter by the gate is the George Frederick Robinson - Marquess of Ripon. statue. It is a large grand statue looking out over the gardens.
The gardens are open all year round so are worth visiting even out of season.

Earl De Grey and Ripon

Look this guy up on google. He was big in Queen Victoria's time. big historic story behind Earl De Grey. His son died on the grouse moors nearby and was one of the finest shots in England.

Statue of George Frederick Samuel
Apr 2016 • Family
Visited the Spa Gardens Ripon and just inside the entrance is the large statue of George Frederick Samuel. The statue was erected in 1896 and he was the son of the first Earl of Ripon. There is information on all sides of the statue. There is also a cafe & toilets a short walk away in the gardens.
