Staying in Ashford in the Water we popped into Bakewell several times during our week’s holiday as only a 20 minute journey
Parking is quite expensive but plenty of places to park
Nice shops and started our Christmas shopping early. Couldn’t resist going to the Bakewell Tart Shop to bring back treats for the family.
We were blessed with gorgeous sunny weather and enjoyed walking our lunch off walking along the river- there’s a bridge that is completely covered in padlocks
Definitely worth a visit when I’m the area. There is a farmers market once a month which we visited on our first day there

I've chosen the River Wye to review as it gives me the opportunity to also say something about Bakewell. The not too deep River Wye runs through the town and is clearly a popular sight with interesting bridges crossing it and an abundance of bird life on the water.
As for Bakewell itself, I thought it was a really lovely town. The centre isn't marred by modern buildings so has retained a lot of character. The centre is mostly on the flat and not too large, making a walk through it quite pleasurable. It's not all Bakewell Tart shops or tacky gift shops and there are quite a few places where you can stop for a coffee and cake etc.
Don't be put off by the hills on the south side of the town. A visit to the Old House Museum is recommended but if you don't fancy going that far, just take in some of the streets leading up the hill.
If you have the time, I think it quite possible to spend 5, 6 or 7 hours exploring Bakewell. Super place.

Nice run out to Bakewell in the car from Sheffield on a sunny but cold November Sunday afternoon.
Many cafe's and shops were open in accordance with COVID-19 rules (lots of queues outside etc.) but you could get fish and chips, cups of tea, snacks etc with ease. Bought some duck food from a local pet shop and fed the ducks whilst walking down the river. Really nice day.

A lovely sunny afternoon spent in Bakewell. Such a lovely historic town with beautiful scenery. The bridge known as ‘love lock bridge’ was really pretty. Managed to buy a padlock from one of the shops in town (5 mins walking distance to the bridge) 🔐
There’s a Monday market happening so was slightly busier than usual and parking can be hard to find so avoid Mondays! Local fish and chips was absolutely delicious and not to mention the over priced ice cream vans 🍦
Bloomers of Bakewell is the place to buy your tarts! Definitely worth the visit and a perfect family day out 🥰

Lovely town Bakewell with many quaint shops & good foods. Always busy. Good parking & well maintained streets. A bridge over the river displays many snap on locks placed there by lovers. Treat yourself to fish & chips and watch the wildlife on the river. Many seats to chose from.

We were on a coach tour of the Peak District being based at the Jurys Inn Hotel in Derby. This particular day we were enroute to Chatsworth House but we had a stopover in Bakewell for around 2 hours.
In walking into town from the coach park we had to cross the Weir Bridge across the River Wye and were surprised to see hundreds, if not thousands, of padlocks attached to the bridge railings. We later learned that they are regarded as 'love locks' whereby the name of an individual or a couple of people is engraved on the padlock and after it is attached the key is flung into the river so that the padlock cannot be unlocked. I think that the practice has its origins in a similarly adorned bridge in Paris.
Apart from the bridge with its many locks it was encouraging to see a wrole range of waterfowl on the river, surely a good indication of the cleanliness of the river at this point.

The river is beautiful. It is clear and calm and I could have sat by it for hours. A car park leads you over a small bridge to the other side of the river where there is plenty of benches to sit on, but also patches of grass and a wall where lots of people had been sitting eating cakes and fish and chips. Lots of ducks and fish, which people were feeding bread, crumbs and fish food that they had bought from one of the many pet shops in the town.

We enjoyed our visit to Bakewell and the River was a lovely way to spend time but we particularly enjoyed the Wye at Ashford in the water.
This village was delightful and my wife and I were mesmerised by the River and wildlife particularly the many trout that were leaping up and snatching the bread that was being thrown to the many ducks.
The River is extremely clear and a lovely relaxing place to sit.

Bakewell has much to commend itself to the visitor - but the River Wye is one of the best. Easy access to the riverbanks where the birds and giant fish are readily viewed.

I walked from the centre of Bakewell to the start of the Monsal Trail as I had done a few times before, stopped for a drink at station after about 30 minuets into the walk.
Directly after passing through the first tunnel I climbed the steep slope to the café, it wasn't open, think it's closed on Mon & Tues but the pub was & we enjoyed a drink & sandwich there.
Returned to the track & this time decided to follow the river, it was an easy and pleasant walk ending at the Manchester to Bakewell Rd there's a bust stop so we could have caught a bus back to Bakewell or just followed the road but as there wasn't a pavement we decided to cross the rd and take the scenic route back through the woods, this turned out to be a difficult walk along a winding track, over streams, slippy rocks and steep slopes, we came across an abandoned water mill before entering Ashford a very nice village with a café, one last drink before the final leg into Bakewell

The car park is said to be 'Pay and Display'. Does it accept debit cards, or does it require a phone app, and if so, which?

The car park accessed from the Matlock road does take coins. I used this park only 5/6 weeks ago when the fair was in town. Some of the Dales car parks do take cards or ring a number to pay by phone. Hope this helps.

We are looking for a walk in The Peak District/Derbyshire, that is ideally in a loop so we can return to where we started and pushchair friendly. A pub would be nice also to get lunch but not essential. Can anyone advise if this walk meets the criteria? Or failing that, is there one that is? Thanks

A better bet would be to park in Baslow and walk around the Chatsworth estate. That's better for pushchairs and there are several excellent pubs and restaurants in Baslow.
is there fishing near by
