Great visit
Jun 2021
We stayed in a cottage just up the road this week and visited the bar/restaurant at the Lathkil four times - I just wanted to say what lovely staff, on every visit we were met with friendly helpful people who were nice to our dog .. the food was also good and a fantastic view - we will be back. Thank you.

So disappointing
Sep 2020 • Couples
We’re regular visitors to the Peak District and the Lathkil Hotel has been one of our favourite places to eat. I realised that things might be a little different this year but nothing could have prepared me for the disappointment. Only three starters, none particularly appealing. No venison and blackberry casserole as in the past. The laminated menu seemed very downmarket. But it was pie night, which my husband had enjoyed last year. He chose the lamb pie with chips, I chose the mushroom and leek in cream and white wine sauce with vegetables. The vegetables were vile - clearly a frozen mix of carrots, peas and green beans, and were very watery. The pastry was delicious. But the filling was very stingy. No evidence of white wine. Very few mushrooms or leeks. Mostly cream with a pastry lid. My husband said that his pie was also stingy in terms of filling. What a shame that a once great place has declined.

The perfect post-hike food & drink - lovely home-cooked food, hot buffet style!
Oct 2019
We've been here a few times and always had lovely food & a nice time. Lovely home-style food served from a hot buffet - meaning you don't have to wait! The restaurant is no frills but perfect for a country pub / restaurant. The snug is lovely for a pint or 2 of cask ale.

A welcome break

We were on a long and meandering country hike from Youlgreave, riverside woods, access through farm fields, passing through a village, heading for lunch about 6K into the walk. Getting to the hotel in Over Haddon involves a 20-minute walk uphill from the trail on a very steep path, then through the village. The patio gave us incredibly splendid view of hills and dales, but also exposed us to smokers who made no effort to blow their smoke away from non-smokers. The hotel had both a dining room and a pub, and that day featured a buffet from which people could pick one item plus sides. I went for a very good venison stew. While the hotel allowed dogs, it required hikers to remove their boots when going inside, which was pretty inconvenient. Whn will the UK ban smoking altogether in eating establishments?

A true Derbyshire gem

Stayed here midweek four times now. It's just fabulous. Unspoiled time warp type if place. Very traditional. Essentially a walkers place. Staff are very professional and helpful and pleasant. Food excellent too. Real ales on the bar mostly local micro brewers and constantly changing. Breakfasts magnificent - set you up for the whole day. Particularly the local black sausage made in Bakewell. Best in UK. Rooms are modern refurbished with excellent bathrooms. But v small particularly if you have walking gear. We always book single occupancy rate. Can't wait to go back. Photo is view from front terrace - millionaire's view.

Our third visit to Lathkil Hotel, this time dining in the public bar area. Lovely atmosphere, fabulous views across the Lathkil Dale and interesting conversations re the Y Not Festival - visible from the bar (distantly)! We table hopped hoping to eat in the much more atmospheric bar as opposed to the restaurant and we're lucky - a table with wonderful views. Our food was delivered promptly and was served with a friendly chat with the waitress. Our choice of chicken goujons, steak and ale pie and goat cheese parcels was reviewed as follows : chicken goujons (16 year old verdict - best he's had) steak and ale pie (indeterminate age husband - very good indeed) goat cheese parcels (see above but wife - okay as a starter but rather unimaginative in delivery as main). Dessert was black currant and apple pie (beautiful pastry, wonderful sharp black currants) chocolate brownie (moist and moutwatering). Overall, a satisfying meal. My only criticism is that the vegetarian options are a bit unimaginative and could do with updating.

Weekend of relaxation and laughter.

This hotel has fantastic staff. Although young and therefore inexperienced they offered good humour and a willingness to give assistance and take an interest in what we were doing in the peak district. The rooms are small, but have the most comfortable beds and fantastic views so you can forgive this. The food is also good, although I would not order a sauce with my steak again as it was just flavoured cream(sorry). I would definitely stay here again.

Really enjoyable.

When we arrived we were asked to either take off our walking boots or cover them with over shoes to protect the pub flooring, what great idea. I loved sitting eating my lunch with my walking boots off and I love the fact if you don't want to take them off, they offer an alternative. The food was good, quick and inexpensive. It was almost like a buffet style, but it really worked. Great views to add to the enjoyment.

Friends agreed to take us on a 6 mile hike up hill and down dale with Sunday lunch at the Lathkill the incentive. Scenery was stunning and now know what climbing the North face of the Eiger is like!!! But the Lathkill was tops - great food, both mains and desserts and great beer - only spoils by our guide pointing way into the distance at a church spire "that's where we're heading!!!!!!!!" - like Terminator, we will be back!!!!!
