About
The historic Linacre Reservoirs provide the perfect setting for a quiet, relaxing day out. A network of trails and footpaths crisscross the valley. Visitors can explore ancient beech and oak woodlands or follow the course of the Holme Brook as it cascades down the valley. The peaceful setting means the site abounds with wildlife. Nuthatches, flycatchers and woodpeckers can be seen and heard as they flit among the canopy and kingfishers and mandarin ducks can be spotted around the waters edge. The site is accessible all year round. Car parking There are three small car parks along the main entrance road to the Linacre Reservoirs. Car parking at Linacre costs £1.00 for up to two hours and £2.50 for the day. An annual parking permit for up to two cars costs £25.00.

Now this is a country walk so its not flat neither is it a hill walking hike. Its 4 km. Round all three lakes but by crossing the dams you can easily split it into a shorter walk. There are toilets between middle and lower lakes.
Parking is pay and display.
There are plenty of birds and squirrels to see and last summer we saw a grass snake.
There are information boards explaining some of Linacres history here and there.
Take a picnic on a nice day.

Came upon this gem whilst visiting the area. It is a great place for walking and relaxing. There are different walks, a one way system, toilets and so much space to enjoy this. It is so quiet you can hear the water trickling and allows you to walk right next to all 3 reservoirs. Only cost is parking, £1.50 for 2 hours or £3.00 for all day (we would recommend all day). You can walk to the pub in the next village from the reservoirs.

We enjoyed a welcome return for a relaxing walk around the three reservoirs through the trees and beside the water. Lovely to see several mandarin ducks and delighted to see a family of moorhens with three chicks right beside the path by the water's edge. After a few photographs we witnessed a fight when a marauding coot launched an attack with his eye on the chicks, but the parents defended well and the babies were spared. We finished off with a picnic at the site near the car park overlooking the lake, soaking up the sun and appreciating the beauty.

A lovely walk around the Linacre Reservoir, a fairly long walk so make sure you wear good footwear. Very peaceful place and would recommend to friends and family. Car parking is near and is fairly priced.

The Bank Holiday sun was irresistible and we hoped to avoid crowds at the coast by staying local. Having previously been regular visits, we hadn’t been here for some time due to lockdown and it was nice to be back.
The parking machine was out of order which saved us a couple of quid, but the ice cream truck sitting in the car park soon took care of that.
Lovely scenery, not too busy despite car parks being relatively full. People social distancing and passing with care. Lovely way to spend a couple of hours taking in the views.

Our 2nd time visiting Linacre. 3 families getting together from West Yorks, Sheffield & Staffordshire. Superb spot for a walk including dogs, a chat & a catch up. Relatively easy walk around the 3 levels through woods, the boardwalk at the top. Think it's just under 3 miles for a full circuit. Picnic benches here & there. Plenty of parking for a small charge. Love it here!

Visited with my sister in law on a gorgeous Autumn afternoon. Though the car park was busy. The area is so large that it never feels crowded.
When I visited a few weeks ago there was a one way system in operation. The notices have been taken down. This is a pity as the boardwalk is narrow and passing can be difficult.

Ideal little walk if you’ve got a little one. This was our first time in the area walking. Usually we bike around the peaks.
We walked about 3 miles around all three reservoirs today.
Most of the paths were good under foot and there were plenty of view points of the water.
It’s a mixture of flat pathways and hills which is signposted and easy to follow.
We had a five year old who’s not that keen to n walking and a dog that will walk till his legs fall off and they both enjoyed it.
I can imagine in the summer it’s beautiful to walk around.
Parking is about £1.50 for a few hours and there is a toilet on the lower res.
There are plenty of pubs and n the surrounding area if you fancy a bit to eat after a nice walk.

I went with my dogs and noticed they now have a ticket machine in the car park. I know they have done some new work up there but I think it's disgusting you should have to pay to walk your dogs. I won't be going there again and I know it won't just be me.

Not that I can remember, there is two car parks on the lane down to the main carpark.

Are there any toilets at any of the three reservoirs?
Also how much is parking and the best place to park as would be travelling from leeds with our dog.

Best place to park is at the main car park which is signposted very close to The Peacock Inn at Cutthorpe,it’s only about a quarter of a mile from the pub if you come in from Chesterfield, can’t remember off the cost of parking off the top of my head and finally yes there are toilets just down from the car park.
how far is the circular walk

From Sheffield which is the best route to the car park at Linacre. Using our sat nav was a disaster.

Hi Jennifer...I also had the same problem with the sat nav...the best way is to postcode the nearby pub The Peacock at Cutthorpe S42 7AS and if approaching from Sheffield it’s about half a mile or so past on the left and is clearly signed...hope this helps....sorry for late reply but it’s about time Tripadvisor informed posters when a question arises...cheers.

We like to go to Linacre with our dogs but we have heard that the water quality isn't very good ie algae.. Does anyone know if this has improved in recent weeks?

Sorry, I don’t know the answer to your question but sure if you contacted the authority they would let you know. I don’t have a dog so not been an issue for me. Hope you manage to find out.

How does Seven Trent stand on dogs being off their leads?
SevernTrent W

Hi there,
Dogs are welcome on site but we ask that they are kept on a lead at all times. This is for the safety of all of our visitors, their pets, the livestock on site, and to ensure the protection of our wildlife including ground-nesting birds.
I hope you enjoy your time here :-)

We love walking around Linacre and have for a number of years. Its my little boys 3rd birthday mid Oct. We are going to do a Going on a bear hunt theme, and thought of coming to Linacre for a stomp. We are planning to stop in the woodland area for a play and was wondering if we could bring a BBQ for a hot lunch. Not a disposable, its our own and its off the ground. We are very responsible and would leave the area as we found it. It would be a small group of family. Thank you Jade Haggett

You can drive down the single track access road and park next to the middle reservoir. You can then choose to walk one, two or all three.
There are signs around the wood to show you various routes, but the main path is easy to identify.
Are the bluebells still out at the end of May?

I would like to know the location of all the wood sculptures please for my grandson when we walk round there soon, especially the ones that look like doors in the trees etc

Most of the wood carvings are on the right hand side of the second reservoir but they are scattered around the circuit. There is a visitors center and map at the first (lower) reservoir enjoy
