Have just spent a lovely (and relaxing !) 2+1/2 hours on a canal trip, having a look around the gift shop and then a nice coffee sat outside watching the canal boat come and go on a lovely sunny afternoon !. Went with my Grand Daughter and her two lovely children and had a nice family day out. Both the girls were allowed to steer the boat we went on for a short distance, supervised as did the other kids on the trip too. The staff were absolutely lovely and very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Cath, the lady in the gift shop is a real star and was great with the kids. ( two budding volunteers for the future I think ?) this is a great day out for the family and its a bonus when the sun comes out ! Everyone involved in the canal trust and getting it to where it is today for people to enjoy deserve a great vote of thanks for providing this wonderful ,local resource. THANK YOU ALL !. (p.s, we will be back !)

I spent a lovely couple of hours here with a friend. I am disabled but was able to hire a Tramper mobility scooter from the information centre. This was a comfortable ride, the path was well suited to this vehicle. The walk was nice and peaceful, away from sounds of traffic. This is probably the easiest, and quickest place to get to, from Chesterfield town centre if you want a bit of peace and quiet and green surroundings

We walked from Staveley to" The Hub" for tea & mid morning snacks. Glorious countryside & met many people in the same frame of mind! From there we walked in the direction of Chesterfield & saw herons & waterfowl in abundance. Fishermen lined the banks & all was well with the world. Good underfoot & we just had to be aware of the many cyclists who were enjoying a rain free day with blue skies & lovely sunshine. After the terrible weather experienced in previous months this was a well earned treat! Walking the tow path is suitable for all ages provided the very young are supervised. Great morning out.

Experienced a lovely relaxing trip on the Madeline Narrow Boat which was built by students from Eckington School and is skippered by volunteers from the Chesterfield Canal Trust setting off from the lock at The Hub, Hollingwood. The setting is lovely, with lots of greenery, wildlife and of course if the weather is kind makes for a really enjoyable experience. All ages are catered for and there is opportunity for you to take a turn at the tiller if you wish. All members of staff are volunteers but the knowledge and enthusiasm is most professional and informative. There is a lovely cafe, Nonnas stationed at the lock where you can while away the time between trips with eating inside or weather permitting outdoors in the garden area. There is a safe car park at the side of the lock with plenty of free spaces but this closes at 4.00 pm. I understand you are able to book the canal trip for two hours or more for private parties if you contact the Trust. I cant recommend this attraction enough but only to say please try it for yourselves.
Well done to the volunteers of The Chesterfield Canal Trust.

The weather always makes a walk along any canal a better experience and today was no exception. It was a good walk.

I was visiting chesterfield seeing my family and we decided to go on the canal boat sunday afternoon. My 2 boys aged 4 and 9 were so excited! when we arrived, about 2.40pm to buy tickets for the 3pm trip, it was fully booked up. The boat will only take no more than 12 at one time. I was so disapointed as were my children. I thought it would be quiet being a sunday, but i was wrong. However the staff were fantastic and did a 4pm trip extra as there were enough people wanting a trip. When we were on the boat my children stood outside the front and they really enjoyed themselves. The staff were very chatty with lots of humour and i would like to thank them all very much for making our trip memorable.

We stayed at Premier Inn North for a short break and walked into Chesterfield along the canal. The initial stretch was very pleasant but the nearer you got to town the untidier it got. The problem seemed to be rubbish from industrial sites and factories on either side blowing or falling onto the banks and becoming lodged in the trees and shrubs. Could do with a bit of a clean up. We didn't walk in the opposite direction but the bit we did see looked much more pleasant.

It's not the cleanest or prettiest canal we work on, but considering Tapton Lock, our launch point, is only 5 minutes from the town centre and school we work for, it's a local gem.
The canal tow path is well maintained and very well used by local walkers and cyclists.
We regularly use the canal for training young children in the skills of open canoeing building them up for bigger adventures.
Occasionally, we paddle from Tapton Lock to Hollingwood Hub and Nonna's cafe which is well worth a visit and makes a great destination. There are several locks to admire (and negotiate as we can only carry around them) and bridges to travel under.
The road noise at the Tapton end reminds you how close you are to town, however, after a mile or so, the noise does all but disappear.
All in all, a very pleasant corridor and so close to town.
Ignore stupid comments in other posts about no railings. IT'S A CANAL!!!

My husband and myself walk all over and walked down to the 'new development' on the canal towards staveley. This is a fantastic walk, herons by the water make for lovely scenery, frost on the leaves and a crunchy underfoot makes a lovey wintery walk. The walk is clean no rubbish, plenty of benches for a rest and a lovely cafe at the clock tower at hollingwood, fisherman along the way enjoying the peace and lots of push bikers and walkers. Theres also canalboat trips and events along the canal all year round,an all round wonderful walk long or short

Great progress being achieved by the Chesterfield Canal Trust. Trip boats provide a good insight into the surrounding countryside, much of it rural.

It's a bit unclear to me. Is there a barge one can get a ride on? If so, how long a journey, departure times and cost?
