As a signed up member of the National Trust this is a must. An hour well spent, appreciating the power of water and resourcefulness of our forebears. This was a glimpse into the past. Well presented by volunteer staff. I hope the NT continues to invest, improve and advertise this gem, the last operational mill of its kind in Europe.... More

I always think a day when you don't learn something new is a day in your life that you've wasted. I certainly learned a lot of new things today! I had no idea that spades had once been made in specialised small 'factories' like this, with men and boys working long hours in the heat and the dust, so ably... More

We had just arrived at the International Airport and as members of the National Trust found the mill as a close by local attraction. Easy to find on the A6 Antrim to Belfast road. We were welcomed by the receptionist for the day and shown a couple of videos detailing the history of the project going back many years, this... More

Although well signposted on the way, its easy to over shot the entrance to the Spade Mill. Plenty of parking and there are a few picnic areas. They have a hot drinks machine, toilets, no shop but plenty of information literature. We watched a DVD first which helped us to understand things later in the tour. We found it very... More

I had read an article about the Spade Mill but sadly am unfit to travel there. That said the staff have sent a wealth of interesting information , lovely pictures and a DVD for me to play at home. Thank you SO much

Only a small little place but run by really enthusiastic and friendly volunteers. Really interesting mill, still in working order and demonstrated every day. Never knew there were so many variation of spades, fantastic to see skills of yesterday being kept alive today and tomorrow. Well worth an hour or two of anyone's holiday

We had been meaning to call here for years but never got round to it. Well, that all changed yesterday and returning from Banbridge we stopped off at Templeoatrick and the spade mill. There is ample car parking and you are made to feel welcome the moment you are spotted by one of the three staff members. A short video... More

Great example of industrial age 1800's full working mechanisms still in operation. Living history in action. Well worth a visit if you are interested in industrial age mill techniques. Nowhere else has a working example. Would definitely recommend it. Not for children.

If you thought spades could be interesting you are severely mistaken. What could have been an interesting journey of an important historical place turned into a long and dragged out lecture about spades, spades and more spades. This is definitely not a place to bring children unless you wish for them to be bored to sleep and yourself also!
