- Retro J1 contributionThe Mrs and I were out for a rare child free day today and we happened upon the graveyard and we did a walk around and saw the church door was open, we went in for a look, we love history, and we got so much more than we bargained for! The absolutely delightful Chris approached us and started to give us the most amazing tour and information. None of it boring, facts and humour. Nothing was remotely hard to listen to or comprehend, he didn't bang on and it was impossible to loose interest. The church itself is beautiful with all the stained glass and it was such a sunny October day it was lit beautifully inside. We're really glad we went. I'd recommend anyone to go. He's open till 2 on a Saturday.Visited October 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten October 19, 2024
- lorenzo e fedeTreviso, Italy122 contributionsGothic church dating back to the 12th century. The pastor welcomed us and spent 15 minutes with us to tell us in detail his church, with historical and curious anecdotes. He even made an effort to speak some Italian, which he learned during his Trips with his wife. No cost except voluntary donation for the maintenance of the structure. Worth a visit!Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 25, 2024
- Kenny BCarrickfergus, United Kingdom1 contributionWow lived in the Carrickfergus area all my life and walked through the grounds many times. Just happened to be walking through to get my haircut and seen a sign offering a free tour. So much history and beautiful stained glass windows. If you are visiting Carrickfergus check out their website or give them a call to check they are open and arrange a visit and tour. You won't regret it!Visited April 2024Traveled soloWritten April 27, 2024
- Carey T1 contributionThe priest, Reverend Chris St. James (I hope I recall that correctly) is the perfect guide to tell you about this magnificent old church. So much history to learn and with a delightful sense of humor. There were tombstones going back to the 1700s. A must see and don’t miss Cerrickfergus Castle.Visited May 2024Traveled with friendsWritten May 5, 2024
- briggggg AOlivet, France4 contributionsThis little church is amazing! We were lucky enough to pass by as a churchman closed the door. He invited us to visit the interior. The whole history of Ireland is present here. It contains countless treasures. Our Guide of the Day, passionate about this place told us his story. This church deserves the detour!!!Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 29, 2024

Great historic Church in the heart of Carrickfergus. Dates back to 1182 and charts the history of Belfast itself through its notable benefactors. Has a canon ball in the porch dug out of the grave yard, a relic from the 7 years war. Also has amazing stained glass and Santa's grotto. Well worth a visit. It opens:
Saturday 12-2pm
Tuesday 2-3:30pm
Wednesday 1030-12.00
They arrange guided tours through the office at other times.

If you’re talking any time in Carrick do take a walk here. Even if you can’t get inside the church, the paths around it are astonishing. The church spire is one of the icons of the town’s skyline. Parts of the building are 800 years old. One piece seemed to have fallen off lately! The gravestones and mausolea surrounding the church date from many different centuries. Some are all worn and weathered down, or tilted over by time. Many are very artistic and elaborately beautiful. The connection to the town’s shopping area is through a tunnel under the war memorial bell tower. It was rebuilt in 1962 over an 1831 archway. The ironwork over the gates depicts the three crosses of Calvary, and the spears of Roman soldiers.

Was visiting this church on European Heritage days. I found that it was a lovely church with not only an impressive Sir Arthur Chichester Memorial but also some very beautiful stained glass windows as well as early columns and arches. There were a couple of guides there giving us very valuable and interesting information about the church.

In January this year I attended the funeral service of a colleague and friend in this lovely church. The architecture is wonderful with beautiful stain glass windows and walls which must be about 24 inches/600 mm. I am sure the building is close to two hundred years old although I cannot be 100% sure. It is one of the most beautiful old style churches I have been in In Northern Ireland.

well worth a visit, this church is spectacular and one of the oldest in Northern Ireland. The church graveyard is nice to visit and look at the old headstones.

We spent an enjoyable twenty minutes or so walking around the grounds of St. Nicholas and studying the gravestones in the adjacent cemetery and burial ground. With its sharply pointed tower and rustic exterior, the church is an imposing structure that stands out among the Carrickfergus skyline. On the day we stopped, we were unable to get inside, but that didn't spoil our enjoyment in studying the structure from the outside on a sunny, warm day. When walking around the town and seeing its sights, I would recommend a stop at St. Nicholas.

This church is very old and interesting, when it is open do come and take the tour, and please give a donation. You can see where French soldiers broke the baptism fountain, this wing is hundred of years older than another, theres so much to see. outside, if it is closed, the grave yard has many wonderful old tall celtic crosses and grave stones so old you can't read them any more.

We were delighted to find the Church open to visitors and were warmly welcomed by a charming lady who answered all our questions and was a mine of information. We had limited time to spend in the Church and were so impressed that we have decided to arrange a tour at a later date . The atmosphere is wonderful and you are instantly aware that you are in a very special place. The lady's husband arrived just as we were leaving and he quickly showed us some interesting items etc.
Beautifully kept, well preserved and an undoubted treasure.

When visiting Carrickfergus you must come to St.Nicholas and pause for a moment to soak up the atmosphere, thinking of the generations of people who have worshiped here.
Built by the Normans in about 1280 it is a bit like "George Washingtons"Axe.(Same, but many new shafts and heads).
This Church has been altered over the years since first being built, mostly in Elizabethan
times. It has seen Cromwell's troopers and more besides, and I must admit to being biased as I am a parishioner.
If you visit on a Sunday come and share our services.
