Maculan is an obligatory stop for some of the best wines produced in the Veneto. Fratta, a cuvee of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot is a wine that I find to be a match in quality to almost any wine produced in northern Italy. For the price, not inexpensive but certainly not stratospheric, it's an extraordinary explosion of berry and tobacco notes. The Torcolato, made from grapes dried in the attic on twisted vines (hence the name) is justfiably famous. In my opinion it is the equal of any good Sauterne (Raymond Lafon for example). Here again, it's not Château Yquem, but for the price the wine is absolutely exceptional. I have found visits to this winery efficient bordering on brusque. I don't know if that's a defect or an advantage? No matter what, however, the proof is in the bottle. Finally, the simpler wines like Brentino and their Pinot Nero are worthwhile, if not as spectacular as the cuvees.
