    Colorful wet market
This very crowded wet market sells everything from Fruits, Vegetables, Rice, raw meats, live fish, live chickens, live turtles etc. I recommend closed toe shoes, and a protective face mask . Be aware of motorbikes passing in close quarters.

Very authentic rural local market experience - wonderful!
We visited the market as a small tour group during our Mekong River cruise. The market is huge and it’s bustling with life. You can quite honestly just stand and watch and observe local life going on right in front and all at you - just fascinating. The front of the market is bright and colourful fruit and vegetables, all beautifully displayed. Large parts of the market is under cover - nice and comfortable shaded from the sun and heat. In the fresh meat section you will see stalls processing fresh/ live frogs, freshly skinned rats (although you’d never know they were rats as they look more like rabbits). There is also a small section of live baby chickens and baby ducks. Near the far side of the market are stalls selling cooking staples etc. The whole market is very clean and very safe to wander around- I’d definitely feel perfectly safe walking around on my own (without the tour group). This was one of my favourite stops during the 7 day river cruise.

Sa Dec fresh market in the morning
What a feast for the senses, overflowing with vibrant colors, fresh scents, and bustling activity. At the heart of it all lies the fresh produce section, where locals gather to select the ripest fruits and vegetables. The aroma of freshly baked bread and roasted coffee wafts through the air. It's a true reflection of the region's rich agricultural heritage and a testament to the ingenuity and hard work of the people who call the Mekong Delta home.

Really interesting to wander around this traditional market, loads of fresh produce, great fresh looking fruit and vegetable. Plenty of live produce, including fish, snakes, ducks, chickens. People were really friendly, in spite us getting in the way!! Probably a shock to people who expect their food pre-prepared and wrapped in plastic!

During our river cruise through Cambodia and Vietnam, we saw many markets, floating or otherwise ;we visited many villages and got used to the "One dollar, One dollar" regime which inevitably characterises such places.

However, this was a large (very large) wonderfully stocked local market...for the locals, not for the tourists. If, for whatever reason you decide only to visit ONE market...make it this one. The range of food is astonishing.... from fillets of rat to ...everything other form of meat, and from dragon fruits to ...every other exotic fruit. As for fish....an unbelievable range: fresh??? they were still thrashing about!...so ...YES they were fresh.

You will get some amazing pictures and impressions here....but go with a guide, and be careful what you sample unless your stomach and constitution is stronger than mine....or you are a local.

Sa Dec is about 90 miles from Saigon by road. We spent five weeks touring Southern Asia. And this was the best true “Local Market” we saw during that time. And experience we will always remember and thankful that we had an opportunity to see it.

This is a market where locals go everyday to buy food for their families. Not a tourist market! Our guide who was raised in the area. Said “DO NOT” buy anything to eat or drink from the market. He said, he could no longer eat food from this type of market with out getting sick. After living in Saigon the past 12 years. When he comes to visit grandparents he has to watch what he eats and brings bottle water.

Most items Americans would not eat the types of meats found at the market, lizards, snakes, rats etc. However we told ourselves, if we grew up eating those items or were hungry enough we would not turn our noses up.

Yes the smell is a little un-pleasant. However the smell at our large big clean super market meat and fish counter can get a little smelly at times.

We really enjoyed looking at all the different kinds of fruits and vegatables and learning what they were. Our guide did a great job, showing and telling us about so many different things.

Early morning is a great time to go, but also very very crowded. You must be careful and watch out for the many many scooters.

Do not miss this market, if you want to see and learn about the way of life of the people living along the Mekong Delta.

Best way to visit is by boat. By road 90 miles, two and half hours.

This was a wonderful experience. We left the boat that we were on to visit this market and it was well worth it. It is not sanitized for the tourists but is a proper working environment selling all the things that would be required to run a house and feed a family. There were no gift stalls but plenty of fruit, vegetables, meat and fish on display. Part of the market was 24 hour wholesale where huge quantities of vegetables were being sold. If going to Sa Dec this is a must see!

Visited the market and it was a shock to the non Asian. They were shocked to see the range and variety of seafood and poultry. The fresh fruit was wonderful and tasty. A wonderful place to visit.

If you want to see a REAL local market with a preponderance of locals doing their daily buying and selling of foodstuffs, this is the best we saw in 7 days along the Mekong and day trips to Saigon (Vietnam) and Siem Reap (Cambodia). Fascinating mix of all kinds of meats -- cow, pig, fowl, snake, fish, insects, frogs, and some I couldn't readily identify -- and vegetables.

One of the biggest markets in Vietnam this market stretches most of the waterfront to the bridge and is full of flowers, plants, food and the very confronting wet area where fish, seafood, chickens, ducklings, rats, frogs and other animals are sold, living or dead. Some lay in bowls skinned others barely alive.

The market is vibrant and stretches for many kilometres. All kinds of fresh and live fish, eels, prawns, vegetables, exotic fruits. Many varieties of rice. Hundreds of people doing there daily shopping, you have to dodge all the mopeds. Extremely interesting and provides a great outlook into the local economy

I have seen a lot of markets in the Mekong delta, most of them are rather uniform on terms of produce and goods offered. The Sa Dec market is different, here a lot of different fruits, fish, meat, flowers (Sa Dec is famous for its flowers), but also many different things are for sale. The market is quite large as well, compared to the size of the town. Definitely worth a visit while in Sa Dec.
