What can you say about some public toilets? These are totally remarkable having been designed by an eccentric German architect. They are a riot of coloured tiles and it is worth exploring both the male and female sides. Although fully functioning, these toilets are so mad that proper decorum is not expected.

Drove the route from Paihia ohua kawakawa back to haruru falls. Stopped to use thes amazing toilets. Large group of cyclists were on tour and all appreciative of the artworks and the pedestrian crossing art. Worth a visit. The toilets were clean and hygienic with good running water which is a bit rare as many council toilets have little due to drought and just have hand sanitisers.

I was skeptical about this tourist attraction. the photos make it look like.. a funky toilet, but still.. a toilet. However, what a pleasant surprise! Its more than a cool toilet, this is functional art. the new museum is very cool as well, gives more context about the art and the artist, with photos of his incredible buildings and gorgeous posters he made on the theme of conservation. absolutely worth a stop!

We were on a tour that was offered by our cruise line and stopped in Kawakawa for a short break as we toured the Glow Worm and Kauri Forest. This is a small town with some restaurants and a tourist shop. You can cover the area in less than 30 minutes. One item that is noteworthy is the public toilets that were designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser an Austrian architect. There were only 2 toilets but they had a very interesting design. Other than that you can grab a pastry or sandwich at the Kawakawa Cafe Bakehouse.

After visiting a unique apartment complex in Vienna, designed by the Austrian artist, Friedensreich Hundertwasser, and having been to his "green museum" and gallery in Vienna many times, I was thrilled to discover his work in the little town of Kawakawa. Their public toilets are vintage Hundertwasser, with their uneven floors and walls covered with brightly colored, mismatched tiles and inlaid bottles of different size and shape, decorated with miscellaneous tool parts. His signature porcelain columns, no two the same, adorn the outside of the facility, giving it an additional splash of color and an overall whimsical appearance. Looking at his work makes you want to smile.

They were decorative toilets. I would give them 3 stars because they are clean, functional toilets, but then there is art and uniqueness that add a star. There are only two stalls for the women, so when your tour bus stops here, it is best that you don't actually have to use the toilets as the process becomes a bit long. Stop, take a few pictures of the art, and move on.

A reason to stop in Kawakawa. The loos are worth a look, very quirky and artistic. Quite fascinated. A cool gallery in the building behind. Makes a boring toilet stop turn into an adventure as you look further. Cool.

Out tour group stopped here for a quick bite and toilet, and it was fun to just walk around to see the funky toilets. There are some on the street side, but the cleaner ones are by the library. Surprising, no free wifi anyone around this area. There is not much else to see around this stop.

These public toilets are incredible. Such amazing design makes it a pleasure to use the public toilets. They are so colourful and unusual that it is definitely worth a visit. A very clever designer at work to create this masterpiece.

This place needs a little bit better direction/signage, as we had driven past it twice before we spotted it stuck between shops.
The mosaics, and the use of coloured glass is crazy, beautiful. the shapes are crazier, but fascinating.
