I guess it wasn't my day! Kaitoki camping ground. After tubing Ruamahanga River (Masterton) with friends & still on Xmas leave. I decide to head to Kaitoki camping grounds late that evening thinking it's a normal weekend & hardly any campers there, Man was I wrong?? I pitched up tent further away from the crowd & noise, heaps of "Dog Sh**T", so uplift to pitch else where, stink smell coming from behind a toilet block & flies can be heard & seen, the plumber arrived & left still had issued with the blocked toilet. Next morning up at 6am & packed up, various snorers from various tents. Parked the car at the top car park went for an early morning bush walk. Such a popular camp site... $8.00 a night - Kia ora!

Even in the rain the park is stunning and so well kept. Of course the tiny loop used in lord of the rings Rivendale is beautiful. The gorge is awe inspiring and the campsites well worth the fees. Simple first come, first served so do book if you can. The campsites are very well maintained. The fresh air and walks easy to do and for all the family to enjoy. Saw so many teenagers with parents enjoying the outside and river swimming.

Hidden gem! Would highly recommend for all nature lovers. Easy walking trails, my 3 year old and his grandmother had fun and no difficulty on the trails. Beautiful combination of mountains, forest and river views.

We recently spent a couple of lovely nights here. Firstly on a powered site, then on an unpowered on the top terrace, the lower terrace was all closed due to rain. Nice campsite, didn’t use any facilities, close to lots of nice walks. Pay machine dotted about. Nice spot! Find us on YouTube if you’re about, Saltyskin Road Trip

We almost missed stopping here and what a loss that would have been.
After a short drive into the park (go slow; it's very narrow in places) there is ample parking and toilet facilities.
Once parked, it's a 5 min walk to the site where Rivendell was filmed for the LOTR films.
Quite magical to be there and there are some posts with information and photos present plus a wonderful recreation of an arch from the film.
A must see.

There is a great walk from the gravel lot that gets you to the Rivendell location; however, you will need to walk back or down the road to return to your car. (It was worth it.)
Rivendell... all of the set has been removed, except one arch. There are tableau to help you recreate it for yourself though. Beautiful spot in the world. Even if you don't care of LOTR... visit anyway!
This is also the area where the swinging walking bridge is.

Kaitoke Regional Park is a magnificent area providing a variety of opportunities for outdoor recreation whether you are hiking, picnicking, swimming, kayaking, geocaching, camping, LOTRing or just taking a scenic drive. Beautiful bush, great tracks and amenities.

This is 4 years running that I have come here as is the best in the area. You have stunning walks set in the regional park and a lovely river to camp alongside. There are 2 great cooking and washing up facilities with toilets and a basic wash area. There is also a magic river swim spot nearby that is deep enough for a jump of the rocks. The cost pp for a night is only $6 and friendly wardens pop round each evening and will take a debit card. Really special place that could only be improved by some hot water and showers.

Really nice walk along the river and over the swingbridge into the bush. But the main purpose for our visit was to visit where they filmed Rivendell in LOTR. Lots of info about the filming on boards and you could easily imagine the activity of the filming and stand in some famous places and pretend to be a hobbit, elf, dwarf, or even Arogorn if you so wish (and I do!)

Originally, I came to Kaitoke Regional Park with my friend to see Rivendell, which is lovely on its own with an Elven archway that remains from the old set (even if its much smaller than it originally was), and the location is lovely to see.
Ended up washing my Green Stone in the river, and walked some of the tracks. Such a stunning place that I cant wait to go back to.
If you’re only wanting to see Rivendell, you can drive all the way to the location by following the road signs in the park, or you can walk the 30 minute walking trail :)
There are also camping grounds and swimming locations. The toilet blocks are also very clean.
