We only found this place after talking with a great guy who works at our hotel. We had our own transport however it's not that far from the town of Mahiyangana by tuk tuk. about 10 kms east on the main arterial road you'll come to a small billboard on the left and the place is directly opposite on the right. It's a monastery but looks like it's come directly from the Hobbit move set. The little "houses" are set into the boulders so they take advantage of nature. On the highest point of the rock feature is the temple which we could only see by peeking in through a window and it was elaborately decorated. We were there in April which was low season and we met one of the Monks through a guide who seems to be like the "caretaker". He just decided to tag along with us but we didn't mind. It's free however, we gave the guide a tip for introducing us to some of the resident monks. I feel confident it will go to helping the monks in some way. it's like stepping back in time. I was a bid disappointed to see a litter of puppies living under the footbridge though. Eventually this will be a major problem on the island that I hope will be addressed.
