This old hollow gum tree is ancient, perhaps 500 years old. Nothing is known of its early history until the arrival of Friedrich Herbig and his marriage in 1858 when the tree became home to the couple and subsequently to two of their children also. The accommodation was expanded by constructing a hut of timber and clay. Its also thought that all openings in the tree trunk were closed with similar materials. Later he built a stone house to accommodate his increasing family. There is a photo display of the family and information literature . Across the road there is the old timber trough, carved from a tree trunk, and the well that Friedrich built for water supplies. Remarkable hardship and perseverance.

This is an amazing old, large red gum tree (which is about 300-500 years old). This wasn't a planned visit, but it was on the way to our hotel in Tanunda. It doesn't stand out like what we were expecting, we missed it & drove straight past, meaning we had to turn around. The tree was home for Friedrich Herbig's family in the 1800's for 5 years. Its hard to believe 2 of his 16 children were born in the tree. There are information plaques in & around the tree full of interesting information.

This ancient old gum tree sits beside the highway near Springton and provided shelter for one Frederich Herbig. The tree must be very old and a miracle it survives but happy it has.Across the road is an old well and water trough which one assumes Herbig used.

A settler actually lived under this tree for quite a while, married, had kids, and continued to live under this tree. Pretty cool, and lots of information of who he and his family were.

We took friends from Queensland to visit the Herbig Family Tree which we hadn't seen before, it was a very interesting story, so impressed to see Simon Goodwin (AFL Football Legend) was a descendant of the Herbig Family.

I was honored to be shown this tree by a direct descendant of the family. She is friends with friends of mine. What an interesting history. So be on the lookout. Several family members still live in the area and may bless you with an appearance!

So this is a tree.
It's beside the road.
It's of such little consequence that the carpark for it isn't even paved.
If you happen to be driving by then stop and look at it - it'll be a 5 for you.
If you have to drive more than 35 seconds to get to it then go do something else. You'll not have missed anything.
We drove half an hour to see this on the advice of a visitors center staffer. After I finish typing this I should really go tell her off for wasting our afternoon.

An amazing story of early life in Springton. A family of 12 lived in this tree, back in the 1800's
Would have been a rugged existence. The history is explained on the notices with in the Tree,

We just love old trees. Nearly missed this one as we travelled through the Eden Valley in South Australia. We stopped and back tracked into the reserve. The story of early German settlers who spent a few years living in the base of the tree is so beautiful. We took photos and researched the history on the Internet. There is so much more to learn. The family now comprises over 900 people, they meet every five years at the tree for a family reunion. Some years ago they purchased the land where the tree is located, so that they could ensure the tree is preserved.

I came by here way back in 1979 with my family so I will make my review now nearly 40 years later, . I found it facinating that someone could raise their family in such a tree. How long in South Australia will it be before peole have to resort to such measures again. is the tree still standing. I guess I will have to go back now I know where it is. Will have to do that under my own steam :)

This tree has intrigued us for years, We are an elderly couple and have pictures framed in old pieces of redgum, in our home. We often relate some of the stories we heard about the wonderful family. Are visitors welcomed at a Herbig reunion? I would like to know when the next reunion is due please? Love to all the Herbigs, may they continue to keep their history alive for many generations to come. Anyone who takes the time to study their history before visiting the tree will understand how remarkable it is. Margaret

Hi Trevor, you could be right. We just love the story and the fact that the Herbig family pay homage to it on a regular basis. We have a friend who is connected to winery families in the area, this year we plan to drive over to Hahndorf and surrounding areas to spend a few more days in the area and revisit the tree. Regards Margaret.
