At night fall this extraordinary church is illuminated and can be seen from everywhere in Royan.
It's worth visiting and going inside.
A surprise and history lesson.

Dramatic and compelling in an ugly sort of way

This concrete edifice can be seen as you arrive in Royan almost dominating the skyline. It looks like some bizarre water tower or a weird block of contemporary flats. Better inside than out with some impressive stained glass work. I think it is permanently losing concrete and cement but is worth a visit.

Wow didn’t know post war modern architecture could be so beautiful

This is well worth a look inside, especially on a sunny day, as today was. Truely the gem in Royans crown.

Which was a shame, as it looks interesting from the outside. I have to witter on for several more characters to let you know this is closed. Best to check when it's going to open again.

A unique building

Having seen many cathedrals around the globe, this is one of the few I will always remember. Somewhat delapidated from the outside, its avantgardistic and courageous design will surprise you inside. Very interesting leaflets are available inside. Don’t let you shy away by the construction work (as of summer 2018) - the cathedral is accessible and the best way to approach it is from the back (the fish tail-style entrance).

It's amazing what you can do with concrete!
Jun 2018 • Couples
This building looks ugly from the exterior but is transformed inside to a homage to concrete, including a wavy concrete altar! Unfortunately, some of the rebar is showing and has blown (a local explained that it was built cheaply by the Germans after the older church had been war damaged and the wrong kind of sand was used from the beach and the salt is now causing the corrosion).

There is some interesting contemporary stained glass. Well worth a visit.

Amazing modern architecture
Mar 2018 • Couples
We had never visited the cathedral before as it just looked so ugly from outside, but it is amazing when you enter, the stained glass is breathtaking and the whole building is in the shape of a ship. Really glad we made the effort this time

A modern church constructed in concrete
Dec 2017 • Couples
This church was built in the 1950's to replace the original destroyed by the British and American bombing during Second World War. Constructed in concrete at a time concrete was new for building construction. There are major problems with the building requiring millions of euros to remedy. The church ( often incorrectly called a cathedral) is a building site but is in regular use. It is a landmark in the town of Royan and is illuminated at night.. An interesting design. In accordance with tradition, the architect is buried in the cloisters. The church is on the Santiago Compostela pilgrim route. There are public toilets just outside the church.
