something different in the heart of old Souillac
Sep 2019
A small but charming museum in the very middle of the old back streets of Souillac.
This museum is world famous for its collection and expert restoration of 18th & 19th century automaton and a walk around its display is well worth doing (visit takes about 30min). There is ample parking onsite and just outside and lunch in one of the Bistro's of the old town is well worth including.

For automaton geeks only

Had an hour to kill in Souillac and saw signs to this place so we went in. It's a bit tedious and repetitive after a while, some exhibits are old and tatty. Barely worth the 7€ entrance fee.

It was the weekend when french museums are free to visit so having been curious about this museum for several years we went to discover it. Parking was easy in a large car park off the high street although finding the museum is about tricky if you are a first time visiter to souillac. I expected to be entertained as old automated toys fascinate me. Sadly I found the museum quite disturbing especially the life size automatons. I had thought it might make a good destination for our young grandson but decided against! Other families seem to be enjoying it so maybe it was just me. The side exhibition of African objects was diverting but a tad random. But, hey, it was free and the staff pleasant.

Glimpse into another era

A very large collection of both automated toys and figures dating from the end of the 19th centiry to the 1960s. Beautifully presented, both as individual figures and as set pieces. The route around the museum is well planned and a knowledge of French is not necessary to enjoy this exhibition, appealing as it does to both adults and children. My own favourites date from the twenties but there really is something for everyone.

Lived this place - really well designed to lead you through the exhibition and some amazing automatons - many that were totally freaky!

Great way to spend an hour.

Unusual and interesting

It is rare to find so many historical automated characters under one roof. It is a charming feature of history, much of it related to old fashioned department stores which are not often found today but are fondly remembered by us mature folk! These automs are fun characters and were created to attract customers and entertain; I think they still do so today.

Went there today having read the Tourist Office's website which implies that the museum is open except 1 January. Unfortunately it is closed all winter (November through end of March) so how did the French reviewers write their TripAdvisor reviews?
I have rated as "Average" only because "Rating" is mandatory
