Uncaring
Feb 2020 • Solo
Hoa Mai buses go to and from Vung Tau. I often visit Phu My a city on that route and recently I flagged down a Hoa Mai bus. The driver threw me out at LaPen despite promising to take me to the bus station. When I went to the bus station to complain the staff said it was nothing to do with them. Hoa Mai say there are fake buses with their name so when I took one and there was a problem they said the bus was probably fake. They didn’t offer me a seat or water despite having walked 2.4kms. They took my number but never rang back. When I rang them, they just hung up.
I don’t know if it was a fake bus, but I do know Hoa Mai don’t really care.

Good and Bad
Aug 2019 • Friends
Goo thing is on time pick up from Vung Tau hotel and vehicle was comfortable. However, we were transfered to another vehicle mid-way and the 2nd van was packed and less comfy. The BAD thing is, the driver dropped us somewhere away from our destination without any explanation. The driver was just stop the vehicle, open its door, and said "GO" "GO" and everybody alighted. Good thing we have google map. Otherwise we wont know where to go.

Comfy seats, good aircon, pick up at hotel in Vung Tau and safe ish driver.
Downside was that they didn't drop us where we were told they would and we had to then walk/drive further to our hotel. Only 160k/pp.

Our worst journey in Vietnam
Dec 2018 • Couples
We were looking for a ride from Saigon to Long Hai and got a suggestion from our hotel to go with Hoa Mai.
First of all: not a single person we met, spoke English. That might be the reason why we got in the bus to Vung Tau city instead of going to Long Hai.

In Ba Ria the driver asked us to pay for the ride. We gave him 300k Dong for the both of us. Afterwards he wanted us to give him our exact destination. With the result that he had to let us know - with the help of a vietnamese customer - that we were in the wrong bus and had to leave.

So we went out and found ourselves in the Hoa Mai „office“ in Ba Ria. The employees there made us wait for another bus to Long Hai. But there never arrived bus to bring us to our final destination.

The happy „coincident“ was the big amount of taxis nearby and the employees only told us „taxi, taxi“ and wanted us out. We wanted him to pay for the taxi but he refused - of course.

In the end we had to take a taxi to get to Long Hai und payed another 200k Dong on top of the already payed 300k. We wouldn’t be surprised if the extra money was shared after the taxi returned.

In conclusion: worst ride in Vietnam. No recommendation.

Avoid at all costs
May 2017 • Couples
I've taken buses all over Southeast Asia, and my experience today coming back to HCMC from Vung Tau on Hoa Mai has to be one of the worst I've ever had.

The driver was a maniac, overtaking vehicles by inches then laughing as the passengers gasped at his near-misses. It was physically sickening. When we got back (it was a dangerously short drive), I was so eager to get off his deathbus that I forgot my phone, which I'd shoved between the seat and armrest to stop from bouncing around.

I immediately realized what I'd done and rang the phone. No answer. Called Hoa Mai, who told me to come to their office. The driver turned up 20 minutes later denying he'd seen it. I rang it again-- it had since been turned off. I offered the driver a reward but he continued to deny seeing the phone (probably since a manager from Hoa Mai was with me-- dumb on my part). The manager stupidly kept insisting that a xe om driver must have taken it, a ridiculous cover story that he couldn't even say to my face. He obviously knew the driver had taken it, but had no control over his staff.

That Hoa Mai treats its drivers so poorly that they can't offer the minimum standards of safety, let alone honesty or customer service, is a sign that it is a badly run company with awful employment practices. I suspect their drivers are so reckless because the minutes in between their hourly runs are the only break they get. The luxury of the car comes at a cost I'm not willing to pay. I will never give Hoa Mai my business again.

Limousine Bus from Ba Ria to Ho Chi Minh City - Inexpensive, Luxurious, Crazy Drivers
Feb 2017 • Couples
On the positive, this is an inexpensive way to get from Saigon to the beaches in Vung Tau/Ho Tram area via Ba Ria city. The buses are luxurious and comfortable (Limousine buses) but they also have less expensive buses too.

Limousine bus was 140,000 dong one-way per passenger. The trip from Ba Ria to Saigon (Benh Than Market) took about 1hr 20 min.

On the negative, traveling by road in Vietnam is a disturbing activity for western tourists. The drivers are TERRIBLE. Our bus driver was typical of Vietnamese driving - no rules, no safety, high speed, dangerous passing, driving on the shoulder, talking on the phone, honking everyone out of the way. Worse, our driver seemed to be in a hurry so he drove 30% faster than all the other cars, buses, trucks on the road, weaving in and out of lanes (and not-lanes), very very dangerous.

If you can handle Vietnamese driving and road rules (no rules), this is a very comfortable trip. We arrived alive.

If you are scared by this kind of driving, take the ferry (Greenlines) instead.
