This has good weather and atmosphere but infrastructure not really well developed. Street is not only narrow but also messy with lots of small construction

The first time i have come here. Not too much places for sightseeing, around everywhere is hotel and hostel. The food was good. The weather was cool on September.

Some awesome views up on top of the mountain. That being said there is A LOT of construction going on. The little town is exploding and the entire road up the mountain is under construction so lots of heavy vehicles. I'm only giving it 5 stars because there is a FANTASTIC airbnb along side the mountain, if you're considering a visit, check airbnb. You'll know it when you see it... I'd link it but am not allowed.

For the second time, we tried to visit this “national park.” I think that, perhaps, it’s more of a national preserve and not a park in the sense of the US national Park system. There is one road that dead-ends after about 1 mile at a bear sanctuary which is only open to visitors twice per month. So, we turned around to ask for more information. The entry booth was closed so we left.

We came to there in the morning and the first thing impressed me are fresh air and great scenes. It was sunny and lightly smog so the scenes became more attractive. The houses in Tam Dao are so lovely and colourful. I loved the specialties there, they were so tasty.

Although located 50 km from the capital Hanoi, Tam Dao has a temperate climate.
Cool all year round. From Hanoi to Tam Dao, follow the Highway Hanoi - Lao Cai and turn to Vinh Phuc province.

Tam Dao has beautiful scenery and is a national park so it has diverse flora. This is also a short-term resort with specialties as green vegetables and chickens and fish

But thats about it. Food is mediocre, place is super crowded and everything is very expensive. Me and my wife had a super simple lunch, with fried chicken and broiled su su (a local delicacy) and it costed us 250k VND. When we got to Tam Dao it was 6 degrees celcius comparing with Hanoi downtown. So if you have free time and nothing specific on your to do list then Tam Dao is worth a visit.
If you wanna look down from mountain top Quan Gio cafe is a good place, but be warned, drinks are mediocre and expensive. We had a glass of lemonade and yogurt.
Would i recommend this place? Probably not, but if you have nothing else to do then go.

My partner and I, having taken the advice of someone who really should have known better, decided to visit Tam Dao. I have travelled extensively but this really was one of the worst 24 hours I have spent in any country.

If you are interested in seeing how rich Hanoins spend their free time – karaoke, endless selfies, - then this may be the place for you. The only think I can liken it to is a sort of Vietnamese Disneyland on crack. The bear sanctuary was closed; never mind we’ll take a walk in the National Park – no dice, closed also, no explanation offered, we were just barked at and told it was the law. There is no peace to be had in this phony hell hole of a town, construction starts at the same ungodly hour as it does in the city, the roads are completely jammed with cars, and of course the usual imbecilic honking of horns.

There are many hotels; we were unlucky with ours which was a disconcerting mixture of absurdity and damp.

We left. The 2 hour+ drive back was not as unpleasant as the drive there, being only near run off the road by SUV drivers on the wrong side of the road (hooting furiously) only a few times. We were glad to get back to Hanoi, away from the chaos of this countryside idyll. Avoid at all costs.

If your looking for a weekend getaway that is not popular for tourists in the dead of winter, Tam Dao is a beauty. Mountain passes with beautfiul forests. Amazing street foods, great options for accomodation and loads of locals with stories for days.

I advise you take a whole lot of warm clothes and if your doing the journey by bike like we did from Hanoi make sure you have gloves, 2 pairs of socks and a baraclava or beanie.

The air on top of the mountains is magical and the views are breath taking. Go forth and see for yourselves and my advice would be dont book any accomodation find it when you there.

We spent a few days in Tam Dao to escape Hanoi's heat. It's only about 2.5 hours by motorbike and the mild weather was just great. At night, the fog rolls in and swirls around - really surreal! Tam Dao town is 920 meters, so it is noticeably cooler than the valley below.

Our Vietnamese friend said that Tam Dao is like Sapa was 15 years ago, before it was "discovered." The area is lovely and the views over the valley are spectacular. We stayed at the Kim Lien Hotel - a small hotel with clean rooms, for only about 450,000 VND per night (just over US$20), and they even had an elevator. No one spoke any English, but we were able to communicate with no difficulty.

For food, you can either get exotic meats (squirrel, rat, porcupines, pigeons, etc.) or go to one of the BBQ places for beef/chicken/pork, and be sure to get some "su su," (fried squash leaves) and sticky rice in bamboo. Wasn't able to find much for traditional Vietnamese fare in town...

The park itself is pretty rustic. The trails we saw were steep and required a bit of scrambling. But it's still worth it to get out into the peace and quiet, no horns, no traffic, just you and nature. There is also a nearby temple that's worth exploring (you can see my review about it).

You can make the trip there and back in a day if you have your own wheels, but to get the most out of it, plan to spend at least one night in town.
