A great way to "get away from the crowds"
Mar 2021
My daughters are beach fanatics.... so booking a place on the lagoon in Panama City Beach didn't seem to be a good way to start the trip. On our first full day, we aimed for a destination a bit further afield. We had passed Camp Helen and several other FL state parks on a trip the prior day from Panama City Beach to Destin (outlet malls).

We were pleasantly surprised by the cost ($4 for vehicle thru an unstaffed entrance).

The trip from parking lot to beach would be a bit difficult for someone with standard portable stroller or a conventional wheelchair, but was a reasonable walk in the sand for my wife and I. Trail markers indicated it was a 7/10 of a mile walk to beach. The kids beat us the the beach, but we enjoyed the sights and signs along the way.

We were pleased to find that the beach had a tidal pool that made for some safe places to get your feet wet, and a place to be "socially distanced" from other families.

I don't normally make a big deal about the washroom facilities, but for the "remote" feel of the facility/area ... it really was wonderful to find a well kept washroom that smelled and looked like they were trying to follow a "higher standard" of cleanliness during the COVID-19 period.

Signs that explained the prior usage of this property made for a more interesting trip to the beach. Compared to some things that I've seen when driving back from this park made me very happy that we made the trip.

Thank you to the park staff, and keep up the good work.

Beautiful Surprise!
Mar 2021 • Couples
We checked the park out not knowing what to expect. It’s beautiful and peaceful. We enjoyed walking along the paths and learning about the cabins and the wildlife. We hope to go back and rent kayaks or paddle boards.

Nice State Park, very clean. Loved the history but wished the buildings had been open to. Nice area to walk.

Nice Walk
Oct 2020
Hard to call it a hidden gem when it's the top ranked attraction in the area, but we almost skipped it -- assuming there are plenty of other places for hikes/walks. Glad we didn't! Nearer the beach, you're exploring dunes -- toward the lake, you've got paved/wooden paths that make the walk more accessible -- with a loop on the north side of 98 and great views of the lake. Kudos to the team who manages the upkeep.

Great State Park

What a fantastic historical gem. I'm so glad that we visited it. Only wish that some of the buildings were open for tours. Maybe next time.

Beautiful quiet park to hike, kayak and paddle board
Aug 2020
Went to Camp Helen while staying at Pinnacle Port. Took a lovely short hike around the grounds with beautiful trees and views of Lake Powell and the Gulf. The tour guide, Scarlet, was super friendly and informative about the history of the park and the buildings on site. We returned the following morning to kayak on Lake Powell. The staff, Friends of Camp Helen State Park, were very friendly and the prices very reasonable. We just went for an hour, not knowing what to expect, but would go for two hours the next time so we could kayak all the way to the Gulf without feeling rushed to get back before the hour was up. Saw beautiful birds and a crab, and fortunately, no alligators! We would definitely go back.

The views here were gorgeous! We didnt have much time to spare here, but what we saw we loved. The live oak trees with moss were absolutely breathtaking. I wish we couldve stayed longer, very peaceful place.

Bit of a hike from the car to the beach, but once you get there, it's worth it. Get away from the crowds and into a more natural beachy area.

Great place for paddle boarding
Feb 2020 • Couples
This is a nice park with great beach access and pretty dunes. It has many well kept buildings that I assume can be rented. Looks like a great place for a family reunion or other gathering. They have lots of kayaks and paddle boards for rental is it the right season and you are thus inclined.

Gem of a natural attraction
Jan 2020
We love walking outdoors. This park had forest and beach. A volunteer birder was on hand to identify and explain local birds and their habitat. Also some interesting historic buildings from the Avondale retreat built in the 1930's. Definitely recommend it.
