Topes de Collantes well worth a day trip
Aug 2021 • Couples
While most visitors to the region around Trinidad and Playa Ancon will see the beautiful Topes de Collantes landscape at a distance few will take the time to visit this amazing gem of natural and cultural landscapes. From bird watching to beautiful waterfalls to coffee plantations anyone who is keen on nature needs to visit the park. Easiest way to get info on self guided or guided trips is in Trinidad at the corner of Calle Rosario and Calle Media Luna. Its a small visitor info centre and right across the street is one of the best little restaurants in Trinidad called Giroud.

We hiked in the beautiful Sierra de Banao. It’s where Che Guevara made his headquarters during the invasion and campaign of las Villas. During the trail in the mountains, we were happy to cool off in fine waterfalls “Cascada de Bella”.
A fine hike!

Lovely time
Dec 2020 • Couples
We visited with tui excursions. Really enjoyed it. Other travellers were angry about the noisy hotel that we stayed in, but if you take your iPad and listen to a programme via your headphones at night, all is blocked out.

Loved travelling on the old USSR vehicles to get to the trekking place. Stunning scenery. I was concerned about the walk as I find it difficult to walk uphill but there were no problems. Waterfall was amazing and lunch was great.

Just a Word of Warning
Mar 2020
My wife and I booked on this day trip through Gaviotour. We are 66 and 65 respectively and members of our local walking club. Before we booked we asked if it was suitable for people with a heart condition, (I have Long QT syndrome); we were told it was a moderate 6km walk with only the last 500 metres being quite difficult. The walk was fine on the way down to the waterfall, (which, by the way, is not exceptional), apart from the last few hundred metres, which were rocky and slippy. We set off early to return up the trail, as we didn't want to hold up others. Unfortunately, the walk back up was significantly more difficult than we had been told. My wife had to stop about two-thirds of the way up as she blacked out, and I found my breathing very heavy and was ill for 3 days afterwards. We also found out that a German lady in our party had had a knee operation 3 months earlier and also asked about the degree of difficulty, only to be given fals information. It seems they only want to sell as many tickets as possible rather than consider underlying health conditions. If you are thinking of booking just be very aware of what they tell you before you go.

Reasonably strenuous hike with lovely waterfall and swimming hole

Took a tour here from the centre of Trinidad. Travel up to the national park in an open sided jeep truck. Only takes around 20 mins and makes couple stops at mirador and coffee museum.

Walk to the beautiful waterfall is only around 6km return but about half is very steep and rocky - you will work up a sweat! Takes around an hour each way. Wear trainers or walking sandals.

Nice pool if you want to swim but doesn't get much sun so quite cool. Can get busy!

This is a nice tranquil national park with a few farms dotted around. The trip is easily booked on line or at the tourist office and costs around 35/40 CUC including a typical simple cuban lunch.

We used Sr. Miguel who is local to Trinidad to guide us for this tour (he also runs a Casa Particlares - Hostel Mi Osi if you want somewhere to live in central Trinidad).

Vegas Grande Waterfall
We started 9 am from Trinidad and where back at 4 pm and visited some different hillside places including a stop for local coffee. The really nice part was with the nature trail back and fort to the Vegas Grande Waterfall where you can also have a refrehsing bath. It was partly a rough climb so you need to be somewhat fit.

Wear you Swimsuit, and get a good workout!
Nov 2019
Loved this trail to the waterfall.....took about 45 minutes to get there, through the woods along the creek....rocky, so wear your good shoes (NOT a place to wear your flip-flops). BUT! wear your swimsuits and bring a towel and plenty of water to drink. Was really pretty along the way....
The water was tricky to get into due rocks, but it was soooo refreshing. Swim around the rocks to view the waterfall and little caves. Some folks were jumping off the sides, but???? Unless you know where to jump into...be careful...rocks on bottom. Great break from sightseeing! And although we didn't see many folks enroute, there were several at the falls.

Best Cuba trip ever
Aug 2018
We stayed in an airbb with the most wonderful hosts we could have asked for. The location was very central and every day we took a cab to another city in the territory. Gorgeous!!! Our hosts also cooked for us, some of the best meals I've had in Cuba and I would go back in a flash.

The Amex of experiences start at the summit
Dec 2018 • Couples
You’d be better be whistling the opening to “Tomb Raiders” as you board the behamoth Russian truck, which looks like a repurposed troop carrier. Its open topped reminiscent of my boyhood family trips in a communal truck. Angled seating ensure your stability while this massive hulk rumbles and bucks over any territory. Its the best experience outside of Trinidad with unspoiled typography of the Sienna del Escambray. Its as rustic and lush as found anywhere in Cuba. The journey climbing to the summit is like going to camping, everybody is chatting in animated splendour. At 800 metres above sea level our 45 minute ride from downtown, the air is fresh. We pass the Russian-built sanatorium that is now an anti-stress centre. It look grim in the austere fashion of Russian architecture, juxtaposed against the pristine zone, replete with hamlets in this rural National Park. Its policy of the trucking companies to give a ride to citizens who need a lift up or down the hills and mountains. Would be nice if we in the modern world could adapt or adopt these principles. As we reach the peak, we leave the trucks and ascend 120 steps to a bare concrete platform to gaze amazingly at the mesmerising views.
Our guide is a jolly chap with heavy qualifications in botanic and is totally ofay with the Laura and fauna, pointing out each bird’s trill. He also instructs us into the medicinal properties of plants in passing and utility of usage in every day life. Outstanding story teller. Après a two-hour trek we cross a slim bamboo plank that fords a flowing brook, revealing the resoundingly rich tremor of a cliff with a plunging waterfall, its water spectacularly gushing over rocks, collecting in a pool below where we all swam, even though the day was blustery. The water temperature remains a constant 20*C. The trek went on for another hour when we reached Codina Farm to sit down to fried chicken thighs and a host of salads with black rice. The farm is surrounded by orchids and bamboo gardens with terrific views.

So worth every step along the hiking trail. Beautiful mountain top views.
The hike itself is moderate so be sure to wear proper shoes. And bring hydration.
The the caves are stunning and all along the hike you can hear the thunder od the waterfalls.. Amazing!
The waterfalls are absolutely stunning. Jumping in the crystal clear spring was one the most refreshing experiences ever.
Unforgettable!
