My wife and I booked on this day trip through Gaviotour. We are 66 and 65 respectively and members of our local walking club. Before we booked we asked if it was suitable for people with a heart condition, (I have Long QT syndrome); we were told it was a moderate 6km walk with only the last 500 metres being quite difficult. The walk was fine on the way down to the waterfall, (which, by the way, is not exceptional), apart from the last few hundred metres, which were rocky and slippy. We set off early to return up the trail, as we didn't want to hold up others. Unfortunately, the walk back up was significantly more difficult than we had been told. My wife had to stop about two-thirds of the way up as she blacked out, and I found my breathing very heavy and was ill for 3 days afterwards. We also found out that a German lady in our party had had a knee operation 3 months earlier and also asked about the degree of difficulty, only to be given fals information. It seems they only want to sell as many tickets as possible rather than consider underlying health conditions. If you are thinking of booking just be very aware of what they tell you before you go.

While most visitors to the region around Trinidad and Playa Ancon will see the beautiful Topes de Collantes landscape at a distance few will take the time to visit this amazing gem of natural and cultural landscapes. From bird watching to beautiful waterfalls to coffee plantations anyone who is keen on nature needs to visit the park. Easiest way to get info on self guided or guided trips is in Trinidad at the corner of Calle Rosario and Calle Media Luna. Its a small visitor info centre and right across the street is one of the best little restaurants in Trinidad called Giroud.

We hiked in the beautiful Sierra de Banao. It’s where Che Guevara made his headquarters during the invasion and campaign of las Villas. During the trail in the mountains, we were happy to cool off in fine waterfalls “Cascada de Bella”.
A fine hike!

This overnight trip was amazing! Worth every penny and more. They are 2 very long busy days and an overnight stay at a hotel in the mountains. Make sure you pack socks and running shoes and BUG spray for this trip. Once you survive the "truck ride" to the start off spot get ready for 4+km hike through a damp rainforest. It is slippery and basic-very beautiful just keep walking and....bam 3 waterfalls. On a bit further you get to the swimming hole also with a waterfall. Swim you will be happy you did! clear cool beautiful water. March now to the end and an oasis awaits across a basic suspension bridge-lunch and good cold beer!! The bus trip back is long to the resorts. It is an incredible trip 5 stars all the way!!
the hotels room was way nicer than the resort and the food was the best Ive had in Cuba

Vegas Grande will take your breath away. Literally and figuratively! Great hike with beautiful views. Proper foot wear is highly recommended. Switchbacks down the mountain and back up.

We booked this tour by jeep at the internet cafe in Trinidad and it was great! A chance to hike, swim in a natural pool, marvel at a waterfall, learn about the birds and plants, visit a bat cave and a small coffee farm. Lunch included too. Our guide Lenia was wonderful!

Cuba is full of gorgeous National Parks that are nature preserves. They are under-promoted and have often been the most memorable part of my trips to Cuba. Anytime you visit Cuba it is well worth looking up which parks are nearby and spending the day. They often have waterfalls or swimming so bring a suit, a towel, toilet paper, camera and a bottle of water. And they usually have a lovely rural restaurant so bring some lunch money. I strongly believe in tipping park staff well because they are generally lovely and don't get tipped the way hotel staff do.

Topes de Collates is in one of the parks outside Trinidad. It has one of the best lagoons and waterfalls I have found. If you stay in a hotel in Trinidad, they will probably have a tour you can participate in and the benefit is that they will send a guide along with you who speaks your language. However, you can go to any national park in a taxi or a rental car. Once you arrive, in my experience, there is an entrance with a park staff person there. They will send their guide along with you who may or may not speak your language, if you pay about 5 CUC (which is super cheap).

If the guide speaks your language it is super because they can talk to you about Cuba along the way. The walk to the waterfall is about 45 minutes but the path is easy. You will need to climb down to the waterfall so wear running shoes not flip flops. The climb requires moderate agility and the guide will help you, so don't be put off unless climbing is impossible for you. Have a lovely time!

We went on the Topes the Collante overnight tour on our most recent trip to Cuba. We really enjoyed this excursion and strongly recommend it, especially if you are going to be in Cuba for more than 7 days. The first day takes you through Trinidad and there are many interesting stops on the way, such as a pottery house and an old plantation house. The nightly accommodations are set in a gorgeous mountain. Sure the hotel is not a 5-star, but it's very clean and the surroundings are just breathtaking. Also, major bonus : Internet access was cheaper and faster than at our resort.

The second day hike takes you through a beautiful natural park. The hike was fairly easy in our opinion... and can be done with simple running shoes. The waterfall at the end of the path was very nice and the water very refreshing.

If you love nature and want to get a taste of Cuba outside the resorts... then this is it! And we must add that the price paid (99 CUC per person) was SO worth it since it includes transportation with a guide through the tour plus a local guide during the hike, four meals and a night at the hotel.

My husband and I went to Varadero, and wanted to see more of Cuba, so we took this excursion Topes de Collantes (2 day trip for $125. CUCs per person), included is the bus trip, the hotel for the night (800 meters from sea level), buffet at the hotel, one drink included during meals, the Russian truck ride also included in the price. The excursion went to Santa Clara to the Che Guevara's memorial - it was very nice to see. Our second stop was Trinidad, here we passed about 1 1/2 hours. Trinidad is a very beautiful typical Cuban city. We stopped for a drink and some Salsa dancing... We enjoyed it very much! My suggestion is to bring small gifts with you, soap, toothpaste etc. The people here are in more need than those in Varadero. Then we stopped for lunch - it was an outside buffet in the shade thank God! Food was good. Then off we were to the mountains - during this entire trip the view is just spectacular - especially on the mountains. We got to the hotel which is really in the jungle (what a setting - just beautiful) - the next day after breakfast we put all our stuff in the bus, and off we went on a Russian army truck, which took us even further into the mountains........scenery was just beautiful (make sure you sit on the right side of the truck - you get a better view for pictures!!!)

On this trip you will need comfortable shoes, bug repellent (for the evening mostly) water shoes, if you plan to swim due to rocks in the water...and of course a change of clothing.

This trip is made for 2 types of people - the very adventurous and the not so adventurous!!! Half way in the 3K jungle walk the trails splits and you choose between adventurous or not!

The trails are well marked, and clear of brush, but watch out for the wet leaves - they could be slippery! We saw beautiful tall waterfalls, coffee plantations, a pig (I'm not sure if he was wild or not), we saw a Tokuroku (Cuba's national bird - due to his colors) many small rivers, and finally, you come to a clearing, which you think you just ended up in paradise....the grass is trimmed, majestic royal palms, a small rolling river and the very welcomed Restaurant!!!! Ha cold beer (included) !!!! Then back on the russian army truck.........back on the bus......and off to Cienfuegos....this is also a very nice town, we visited the main plaza....

I recommend this trip to everyone, but not recommended to people with walking difficulties, it is 3k in the jungle......it's quite a walk (feels more like 5k) - this excursion is to do at least once! BRING YOUR CAMERA and extra batteries!

So worth every step along the hiking trail. Beautiful mountain top views.
The hike itself is moderate so be sure to wear proper shoes. And bring hydration.
The the caves are stunning and all along the hike you can hear the thunder od the waterfalls.. Amazing!
The waterfalls are absolutely stunning. Jumping in the crystal clear spring was one the most refreshing experiences ever.
Unforgettable!
