Able to walk in and on the huge concrete structures which are still in remarkably good shape after all the years. Some areas have been adapted for commercial use but one can still get an idea of the work that went on inside during WW2.

We got the address and satnav took us there. Parking (free up to 1 hour) is opposite the place. The complete building is huge and gives you a real feel for its use in the war. For anyone looking for a memorial to the war this is an excellent destination.

Stayed at the Holiday Inn ideally situated opposite the historic U boat pens. In awe of the scale & effort that must have gone into the project given the conditions at the time. The views from the roof are amazing & worth the walk to the other side to view the Normandie dry dock & Saint-Nazaire Bridge. The Espadon submarine... More

The sheer scale of this building is amazing 14 pens for U-Boats plus offices, workshops and dormitories all protected by very thick concrete walls and roof. Even today this would be an amazing engineering but considering they were built in the early 1940's during WWII makes even more amazing. You can walk around some of the pens for free, one... More

St Nazaire WW2 German U boats pens build between 1941/42. When you arrive and see the scale of these buildings you appreciate the efforts that were made to protect the vital U Boat during the Second World War. The building is open to the public and you can just all around as ou wish or you can go via the... More

Visited as part of a war study and we weren't disappointed as these pens are behemoths of concrete. There is a museum across from the pens and you can climb up to the top to see the lock gates that were blown up in the raid in 42. You can walk through the interior of the pens, where you appreciate... More

before we went here on holiday naturally we read up on the submarine pens. We thought we had gathered all the information about them and what to expect. Nothing prepared us for the sight that greeted us as we came round the corner and saw them for the first time. They are awe inspiring and magnificent. They just tae your... More

This was a brilliant afternoon' s activity and to get the best of it allow 3 to 4 hours. There is plenty of parking outside or nearby including for larger vehicles. There is a fortified lock with a 1950/60's French submarine in it that is part of the tour package with audio guide which I recommend. Then walk across to... More

Visited as part our tour, these u boat buidings are massive hard to belief our bombers never hit them but guess if they did wouldn't do much damage the roof must be 12 foot thick, very disappointed in that all they got to show is the actual building not much else but worth a visit
