Rigerous hike with a beautiful view as a reward.
Sep 2019
Sept 16th. After Clingman's Dome, we really wanted to walk a few more miles. The Forney Ridge Trail was just what we needed to blow out the cobwebs. The beginning of the rough trail is pretty much straight down. The hike out to the bald was so peaceful and quiet my ears were ringing from the lack of sound. Beautiful flora, and the view from the Bald was just lovely. We sat in the grass and had a snack, then made our way back. Took us three hours. The climb back up to Clingman's parking lot had my legs stiff and sore the next day. Now that is my idea of a good hike.

Favorite Lunch Spot
Nov 2016 • Couples
Great hike with an amazing view at the end! Be prepared to walk downhill 90 percent of the way in, and hike uphill 90 percent of the way back. We like to pick up a sub sandwich meal in town to pack out for lunch. Take a light blanket to spread out on the grass. Great spot for lunch or to enjoy a sunny day on top of the mountain. So quiet and peaceful! Lots of trail work has been done, but still a rougher hike than some might like. Lots of rock steps, log stair outlays and walkways. Typically not crowded on the trail, and plenty of room to spread out on the bald. Highly recommend.

Gorgeous!! Worth the Hike
Sep 2016 • Couples
We headed out later in the afternoon on a Sunday so the crowds weren't too bad. There were some people on the trail with us - but they never made it to the Bald. When my husband and I got there we had it to ourselves. The hike back isn't the easiest ever - but it is shaded and there are plenty of places to sit and rest for a minute.

Beautifying view!
Jun 2016 • Family
The hike from Clingmans Dome to Andrews Bald was a solid 2 hour hike round trip. It's a nice trail with enough ups and downs to keep your heart rate up. Once you get to the bald, the view is amazing! You can see out in all directions!

Great Hike, Great (Short) Escape
Jul 2015 • Family
Took this hike with my husband and two kids - 8 and 9. After seeing the more heavily visited sites, this was the perfect break to remember that we really were in the wild. The trail-head is right off Clingman's Dome, so if time is an issue, you can see that site and do this hike at the same stop. Parking is a problem, though, and you want to get to the Dome early.

Hiking out is all downhill. The majority of the path is smooth and shady, but there are a few roots and rocks that hikers need to pay attention. My kids weren't the best hikers, but I never worried they would fall off the edge. Suddenly the view opens up to a wide meadow (or bald) that gives a gorgeous view of the mountains. If would be a great place for a picnic lunch. The hike back, however, is all uphill. That's the only bad aspect to this hike.

What a hike!!
Oct 2015 • Family
What a hike!! We took our 2 children 11 and 7 on this hike because my hiking book said it was an easy hike and great for kids. Well let me tell you, this is a somewhat difficult hike. The trail has several rocky areas and areas with make shift steps. The change in elevation isn't too bad but the elevation of the hike makes it a challenge. The views from the bad are beautiful but you can get the same views at the Clingmen Dome parking lot!!

Nice view if the weather is right
Aug 2015 • Couples
Have to echo the earlier review - when we finally made it to the bald, we couldn't see anything due to the fog that had rolled in. It was really unfortunate. It's a nice spot to relax and have lunch and I'm sure the views are great - but make sure you check the forecast and use the parking lot trailhead at Clingman's dome as a gauge - if you have no views there due to fog, you might want to just skip this hike or save it for another, clearer day.

Breathtaking!
Aug 2015
The trail out to Andrews Bald has recently been improved, which made the 3.6-mile round-trip hike much more enjoyable. Once there, we spread a blanket out on the grass and enjoyed a picnic lunch & an afternoon lying in the sun, soaking up the sun & beautiful views from atop the bald. When we were there, the trail was lined with bushes full of ripe blackberries, huckleberries, and wild raspberries.

Nice views cool bald
Jun 2015 • Family
Went to Clingmans dome on a Monday morning then hiked to Andrews Bald. Took about 3 hours round trip. I thought it was a moderately hard hike but that's OK because it keeps the crowds down quite a bit. Once at the Bald is neat that no trees are around just grass and bushes. Would be absolutely beautiful a couple of weeks ago while the bushes were blooming. Views were excellent. Wife and kid didn't think hike was worth the reward.

Hike to/from Andrews Bald
Jun 2015 • Couples
My wife and I did this hike on 6/6/2015. This is an out and back from the parking lot at Clingmans Dome with a total distance of about 3.6 miles. While this is a steep trail with a drop(and subsequent hike back up) of 700+ it is a well maintained trail and a beautiful hike. The vista once you reach Andrews Bald is breathtaking. The rhododendrons and flaming azalea were in bloom to add to the beauty. Very much worth the effort of the 1 mile steep hike back.

Highly recommended!
