This small town's "careful Danish grooming" makes it very special- to both residents and travellers... and It is located just 8 kms from the German Border. In the town centre, one finds a well maintained, historic, 160+ year old wind mill (the largest in Northern Europe) with a Museum- and a wonderful cafe/coffee shoppe (managed by Hanne) located in its marvellous, restored "original garden". Many nearby homes also have thatched roofs with lovely gardens--- some with sculptures in the garden. Having visited over 140 countries- and Denmark 15+ times, we feel more comfortable in this peaceful, beautiful small town, where "local pride" is manifest everywhere. There are many bicycle and walking trails. The Mill complex and the town are definitely an incredible "hidden gem"-- i.e. "off the well beaten traveller's track". Situated at a small square and lovely garden with fruit trees. Surrounding buildings are historical too. When wee where there all was closed, but a nice stroll anyway. Mill looks impressive from the outside as logical part of the village. Not a time consuming conversion if you are in the area as part of glancing through the village with cute buildings. All well preserved…

At this site, you both get a fine impression of the production at a mill and the history of this particular mill. Moreover, you can take part in the production yourself and from the mill, you have a fine view of Højer and the marshes. Do not miss the garden.

Hoyer is a good spot to cycle to as we'd did from Tonder. The mill is a quietly splendid piece of industrial architecture. The cafe was delightful and we could sit outside and walked through the small formal gardens in the miller's house next door. Carry on to the coast if you have the time.…
