Museum was excellent, the winding engine is awesome and kept in pristine condition. Both guides could not have been more helpful, Alan and Steve were friendly and knowledgeable. Steves makes excellent tea and coffee!
Well worth visiting and could have spent hours there.

The museum was very interesting. I intend to return for the Engine Room demonstration. There was an art gallery which had a local Welsh photography exhibit by Ffion Denman which was very interesting. The cafe was accessible and coffee was hot (not luke warm!). A very nice day out.

We enjoy looking at the changing art, craft and photographic exhibitions, and the permanent historical one which is partly inter-active. The winding gear itself is a great attraction, even when static, but once a month it comes to life, courtesy of a group of volunteers who explain what's what and talk about its heritage.

I grew up in Bargoed and brought my family and in-laws back for a visit. I’d never heard of the Winding House - what a treat it was on a damp March afternoon!

The Winding House machinery enticed the kids immediately - the sheer size and the fact that you are up close and can touch it etc gave them a real insight into the realities of our mining heritage. The information on the closure of local pits and the Senghenydd mining disaster was well communicated.

Even better though was the West Gallery, which has a comprehensive history of the county from the Iron Age to the present day. I’ve never seen such a wealth of information communicated so effectively to kids and adults in a small local museum - this is the quality you would only expect of a top national museum or prestige CADW castle. Lots of stuff to keep the kids engaged - dressing up, wooden models, an air raid shelter and Roman armour

Nice coffee shop, good facilities, an excellent selection of books and cards, and friendly staff too.

Very definitely worth a visit if you are in the area - and hugely interesting for those with any connection to the Rhymney Valley.

We visited the Winding House with my sister and brother-in-law who were visiting us from their home in Canada. The museum section is extremely interesting giving the history of the Caerphilly County Borough area from pre-Bronze age to the present day, with many artefacts to look at and in some cases clothes to try on.
The staff were very informative and knowledgeable and pleased to answer any questions that we had.
The Winding Engine was in spotless condition and interesting to walk around, although it was not running at the time of our visit.
This is a wonderful exhibition particularly aimed at schoolchildren but of great interest to adults as well. Well done to the Educational and Tourist arm of Caerphilly County Borough Council.

Took my granddaughter to a Friday morning craft session. She loved it. The activity suited all ages from toddlers (with adult supervision!) to primary school age. After that, the museum was fascinating with lots of hands on activities for the children as well as informative exhibits for adults. Would have loved to see the winding wheel in action, it’s a pity the timetable for that is limited.
Nice coffee area with toys and books, as well as daily newspapers.

Visited on a last minute whim, and glad that we did! What a hidden gem! Wonderfully modern building with welsh mining history hidden inside! Interactive museum that goes through the ages, great for kids! The main attraction- the wheel, was mind blowing! You read about and see things to do with welsh mining heritage, but you never fully appreciate it unless you see it up close and personal! So glad that I stumbled across it on google whilst looking for things to do for a family day out. The coffee shop is lovely too, great cup of coffee & lovely tea cake! Worth finding out the dates throughout the year when they fire up the wheel. Would love to see it! Will return in the future.

An unplanned visit but saw the roadsign and was curious. Wow!!! What amazing machinery in this museum. Friendly reception and plenty to see. Could have spent hours just enjoying the displays showing the history of the valley and coal mining.
