I get the impression that this is the kind of place that Thai love for eating and relaxing. I found the food typical Issan and Thai and just average, but you can sit with a nice view of the river
The market lane is pretty good and well-priced and the park with the archer statue is also good. You can walk across the almost white sand but surprisingly there was no one swimming on the river bend
Sadly, the car park and the place in general is a bit of a rubbish heap.

About 7 km east of Chiang Kan you find this view point on the bank of Mekong River. It is nice but not spectacular and hardly worth a visit unless you have lots of time to spend. You can walk and sit by the river and enjoy the view toward neighboring Laos.

I hated the place.
This is a typical Thai tourist trap.
Vendors, lottery ticket sellers, concession stalls, loud music, overcrowded, limited parking; it has the lot! (when I was there).
I only stayed for 2 photos and abandoned the place.

There is a myth of this rapid told by years that

"Once upon time a time, a huntman named ‘Jueng-Khueng Red Nose’ had long-time hunted a buffalo called “Ngern” (Ngern = money, this buffalo’s feces as money) until he saw it one day aside of Khong River. In the time that he was about to shoot it, a boat man came in a range and the bull ran away up to a mountain (later named ‘Phu Kwai Ngern’ mountain). The huntman shot to the mountain again and again until that mountain was collapsed and became a high cliff called ‘Phu Pha Baen’. This made the huntman very upset to a boat man then he shallowed Khong River by tons of rock piled up against the steam. He had almost done that til a priest saw things. The priest tricked the huntman to use one kind of bamboo loaded rocks like a peddler to save time. This kind of bamboo has particular sharpness when grinded, so It cut off a huntman’s neck when he loaded rocks. He was laid deadly as curl body (N gesture) at aside of Khong River where is now Kaeng Khood Khoo rapid. Although this place has got difficulty to sail, but it comes a sanctuary for kinds of fish."

Amazing tale, but can't deny the good view while you're having local dishes. Here you can get some souvenirs for your loved ones or local clothes yourself, don't forget to taste the fresh sweet coconut (Ma Prao Kaew) before you leave. When the rapid has a neap tide, you can go down and get good photos there.

One of Chiang Khan’s riverfront viewpoint with the backdrops of Xanamkhan, Vientiane District, Laos. Located 8km east of Chiang Khan. There are bicycle lane by the Mekong River front until the Chiang Khan Walking Street. Kaeng Khut Khu is at a bend of the Mekong River and with many islet which are visible during the dry season from November to May and the rest of the months it is submerged in water. A Buddhist temple Wat Tha Kaek has a few original show house of the late monks very well preserve and beside the main hall at the car park some souvenirs and handicraft and a handful of restaurant selling Thai dishes by the riverfront. On my 2011 visit there far more stall along the river front than it is now, before there were no bicycle lane was built. Most of the stall which sells the coconut delicacies we are all line along the river front. The most popular dishes here were the Khung Ten (Dancing Shrimp) - fresh water shrimp which was served live on the bowl still jumping from the bowl and Khung Nawn (Sleeping Shrimp) - crispy deep fried shrimp in mash egg. I can't see it here anymore but can get it at the Chiang Khan Walking Street in the evening.

Read from review and expected to see some nice Mekong River view, or nice sun set. After visit discover is just a local recreation, street food and place of local youngster gathering. The food hygiene level here looks poor, even I never fail trying all kind of street food and local food from all the places I visited, I stop short here. There are step lead you down Mekong River, to some sand beach when water subside.

Get relaxed on the bank of Mekhong River. Visit just before sunset to see a spectacular view. The Boat Ride is worth the cost and the sparrows migrating from Laos to Thailand side are a great site at night.

Kaeng Khud Khu is about 5 kilometres from the centre of Chiang Khan, heading out on the road to Pakchom.
Its a scenic part of the Mekhong where a beach area develops in the dry season. There are stalls where you can buy souvenirs, food and drink.....also the same at a higher level above the Mekhong, too.
You can take some decent photos at this spot.As well there is a very nice resort, whose restaurant overlooks the river, where you can sit and have an ice cool beer or two and a bite to eat in this picturesque area.
