About
For the first time, all of Lascaux is revealed. A complete new replica retraces the discovery of the famous decorated cave. But that’s not the end of the adventure: the entire site inquires into the position that Lascaux occupies in cave art and its relation to contemporary creation.

Disappointed but lack of accessibility
Sep 2021
As the last reviewer no option for any other language than French on our tour in September. No option for a written guide either. There were some German and English tourists on our tour and while we did manage to understand some of the very detailed guide without fluent French it was very frustrating. There was no information when booking that advised the tour would be only in French so we felt really annoyed when we discovered this. Just don’t understand why they can’t provide a prerecorded version at the very least. Thought a world heritage site would have been much more accessible. The lift wasn’t working either, fine for us but not so good for those with poor mobility. Signs saying keep 1 meter apart were impossible to follow given the size of the tour group. Also wondered how we would manage if there was an emergency or incident if everything was in French.

A solely french experience, sadly!

This is clearly a fascinating place, prehistoric paintings - so much interest in this. And the new building and facilities, once they have completed the work will be amazing.
However this is HUGELY let down by the lack of other languages. So if you are french you are fine. There is no provision for any other language. If you want to know more, you have to spend a minimum of €9.00 for a book. This is in addition to the €20 entry fee. Our party had Spanish and English, both of which were frustrated because there was no consideration for any other languages. In addition if you have an unsettled baby with you, you are asked to leave! Very disappointing.

Without doubt, something you should see

Really good. I wasn’t sure beforehand whether it was worth visiting a reproduction, but in hindsight it totally was. It brought cave paintings to life in a way that you can’t appreciate from a small, flat photo. For a start they are huge. And the intricacies in the way they’ve been painted, the techniques that were used, and the way the figures had been planned to fit with the shapes of the rocks, are astounding. The reproduction is like being in the real cave, from the look and feel of the ‘rock’ to the temperature, acoustics and atmosphere. It’s not at all like looking in a glass display box at a museum. The tour guide was brilliant, pointing out a whole new level of things that we would never had noticed. Also, slightly trivial, but the on-site cafe was excellent, offering a meal of a quality you will not find at a tourist attraction in Britain!

Two criticisms: at times it felt extremely crowded, with way more people packed into a small cave than is probably sensible (even with mandatory face masks and the pass sanitaire). We ended up quite nervous about the possibility of catching Covid there and not being able to travel home. Also, when I booked online we could only see tours conducted in French available on the website. But when we arrived there clearly were English tours available too. The staff were superbly helpful and moved us from the French tour that we had booked onto an English one instead.

Fabulous tour with great guide

An incredible tour of the replica caves. We had an English tour led by Joseph - a more humorous and knowledgeable guide you could not wish to find. He also made allowances for my need to lip read as masks are still required. Highly recommended.

Have to see with your own eyes

Since we are not allowed as mere mortals to ever witness the inner walls of the original Lascaux cave, Lascaux IV is the second best option. Recreated to amazing detail, including temperature, humidity and acoustics, this allows you to experience what those boys saw when they first entered the cave back in 1940.
Tour guide in English was very knowledgable and extremely funny.

Interesting, if you speak French.

We visited the site with 5 Young kids (5-10y). None of us are native French speaking. As it was a guided tour with a French guide and no other languages available it was rather boring for the kids. We translated as much as we were able to understand so we also missed half of the tour. In the second part of the visit, the museum, the same problem. Nothing was translated so it was very hard to understand if you are not fluent in French. I think it's a pitty that they missed the opportunity to make it more accesible to an International audience. Especially as it is an Unesco World Heritage Site.

Thank you for your opinion. Lascaux re-opened on may 19th. When we scheduled the visits at that time, it was not obvious that foreign visitor could travel back to France due to sanitary conditions. That is the reason why english speaking visits just begin in july.

Disappointing
May 2021
Tour of Lascaux IV . I was disappointed with my visit. Our tour time was cancelled which was not a problem but we were then asked to join the next tour which was all in French. The tour guide did speak English but there was no translation headsets in English, so for nearly two hours the guide gave the rest of the people on the tour a very detailed description but my friend and I were ignored. I also thought what a lot of concrete for a prehistoric site. However, the recreation of the original caves is amazing.

We are pleased that you enjoyed the replica of the cave. For reasons related to the covid health crisis, we do not give audioguides any longer but guided tours. Since most of our foreign vivitors are being subject to travel restrictions, we do not offer english speaking guided tours yet.

Wow - blown away by the reproduction and quality of the pre-history at the site. The guide, Christian really brought the whole trip to life with his insight and commentary. I can't recommend this trip highly enough, Be sur to book in advance to avoid disappointment.
