Last February 20, 2020 we hosted some friends from San Diego. One of them is a coffees lover. She wanted to taste an authentic coffe from the Island.
As a local, I know about this site in Ciales. So, we went there.
A little bit of history: in the Museum you can see a vast collection of antique coffee mills. It also has rustic pieces used for pulping, drying, and roasting of coffee bean.
They preserved" Casa Pintueles" a collection of documents relating to the business activity of this export company since 1800 until late 1900.
Next to the museum we found Puerto Rico Coffee House, they offered the exclusive Café Don Pello. We bought some of their specialty coffee beans roasted and ground. My friends took some back to San Diego.
Nice trip!

The site says it is open and in so.e places it refers to it as "Hacienda". So we were extremely surprise to arrive at the middle of Ciales town were there is barely any parking, but expecting this museum and "Hacienda" to be in the country just like all other Haciendas. There was NOTHING to do or see. Recommend visiting Hacienda San Pedro, a true living museum and Hacienda.

A good time for the whole family. The museum it self is small and cozy (not very pretentious), but its full of interesting artifacts and documents from the time when coffee was an important export for the island. You must try the coffee, each visitor may have a free cup, compliments of the house. I recommend taking some home with you, the prices are good for the quality of the product. If you are lucky and the owner, Pichi, is there when you visit ask him anything and everything you ever wanted to know about coffee. The guy is a walking encyclopedia in all things coffee related.

In the heart of this central town named CIALES in Puerto Rico, you will find this small and quaint museum, where they actually roast the famed DON PELLO gourmet high grade coffee. There are many variations that you can actually purchase at the place. Since I am indeed a coffee connoisseur (but not an expert), I highly recommend that you take the pleasant 45 minute highway drive up and road #149 to the town of Ciales, to get a taste of one of the best coffees in the island.

The owners are both retired proffessionals striving to conserve our long coffee tradition and history. When the town of Ciales was about to dispose of hundreds of historic material due to lack of funds/interest, these good ricans saw the need and opportunity to showcase it.

This small building houses antique machinery used to roast, pack and label bales of coffee. Also, household appliances which are now considered "artisanal" by baristas, tools and oddities.

They keep old records of transactions, letters from distinguished buyers far abroad (for that time), writings of harsh times and more. As half the people coming true have a short attention span or have no desire to absorb valuable information, you should ask for them to show you.

Aside from the historic purpose of the museum, they roast and pack their coffee by hand which can be seem almost everyday. Outside, the shops await you with a courtesy cup of real coffee and a nice view.

This was an awesome little place tucked away from the public. Tried to get a tour in English but the owner was out of town. Loved this place and the coffee artifacts there.

I went to this area of Puerto Rico last Saturday and entered in the Coffee Museum in the town called Ciales. The owner of this place is Mr. Pedro Maldonado, who I think is the III (third). His family and himself have been not only involved but really living what coffee is and what the industry has been for the island. The place has an area of relaxing atmosphere that invites to drink the elixir of the gods and you could have a conversation around the topic or about whatever. The relics that the museum shows are a living enciclopedia of what not so many knows about what is "coffee". Is extraordinary and extremely interesting to hear Mr. Maldonado expressing his knowledge about the mistics of the coffee. His wife is Mercedita, and is in charge to show the visitors the area of the history found in this town which is traditionally related to the industry. You can even take home a coffee tree.
For me was a remarkable experience and I would like to invite everyone to make a trip to the center of the island and visit Ciales and its Museum of the Coffee. You will enjoy it and will learn a lot. Bring your children they need to know this part of our history.

Excellent service. The owner went above and beyond during our visit. The coffee is the best and it is 100% of PR.

Sadly this place didn't meet our expectations. The place needs to be taken care off, there wasn't anyone to show us around, not really a museum. The coffee shop was very small and even though the coffee was good the service was very slow and not very friendly. Sadly not the best experience.
