The little town of Visso has been named one of the most beautiful towns of Italy, and it is! On its lovely main square you find the former Church of San Agostino, now desacred and host of a small museum. I found the museum itself and the church not very spectacular, except for the collection of paintings of the multiple Sibille, which was nice. What made it worth the €3,50 ticket however, is the fact that the museum also holds a collection of manuscripts by Giacomo Leopardi, including the famous 'L'infinito', some sonnets, a couple of letters and others of his writings. Since the poems are written in diaries, only a few original pages are displayed while of the others high quality photocopies are shown, accompanied by transcripts in italian and some limited information in italian and english about Leopardi and the collection. As an admirer of Leopardi's poetry, the visit was exactly what I expected and I was very happy that we went slightly out of our way for it.

A nice village with beautiful landscape close to the Monte Sibilliano. The best is to go for a walk in the mountains.

Walking across the plaza, I had no idea of what I would find inside this lovely romanesque church. Fragments of early frescoes dot the walls and a huge St. Christopher fresco dominates. Low light levels meant that none of my photos came out, but there is a fascinating mix of the simple early wall art and the more gaudy and stylized modern additions. Some sections are closed off, possibly due to earthquake damage, Well worth the visit.
