Although reached by a first-class road (Visso-Fiastra) that winds through spectacular mountain scenery, the sanctuary seems to be rarely visited by non-Italian tourists. That's a pity because this isolated religious building has an incredible history and remarkable atmosphere. Its origin, it is said, dates from 12th August 1356 when a donkey hauling a wagon carrying a statue of the Madonna and Child suddenly stopped and refuse to go further. It was then decided that the Madonna had selected the place where her statue should be erected. A little church was built to house it and soon a succession of miraculous healings was recorded there and by 1486 it had become an official stop on the pilgrim route to Loreto. In the first half of the sixteenth century, the present sanctuary was built with additional accommodation for priests and pilgrims. Many people visit in summer but few do in autumn when the surrounding trees are turning golden and the beautifully maintained buildings glow in the evening sunlight. A fascinating place to be - with no ticket-sellers or desperate vendors of tacky souvenirs.

It is very very surprising discovery on the top of a mountain, hardly described in any map. A very complex and immaculately kept religious complex ,Not extensively described on any tourists map, it is a stunning architecture. The church closes at 12 e30 pm so you need to get there in time and so does the little shop where one can buy a guide
