Single round with friends

The course is fine but quite hilly on the front nine with fairways that slope either right to left or vice versa trans crossing the hill. Hit the ball on the up slope and it will give you extra run. However each hole rises up the hill until you reach the back nine and then it flattens out and then the last few holes are down hill except the the 18th, relatively flat Great feature on one of the back nine is an electricity pylon right in the middle of the fairway with gur around it - most have large trees! A lot of castlewellans on the course. A hard water features on one of the par 3's which is 220 yards and a sloping right to left fairway makes it harder. Course could do with a bit of grass cutting around the castlewellans but it has been extremely wet on the south coast this year in june 2021. Reasonably priced and good value but busy the day we played so pushed if looking for a ball. Good views on the top of the course as my brother said, but you would from any hill top!

Wretched Hill - 6 hour round hell !
Jul 2020 • Friends
If you want an overcrowded , poorly managed , 6 hour round where groups are packed in to the point where you are backed up on every tee box and then to top it off argumentative , antagonistic and rude members of staff then treat yourself to a round at Wretched Hill golf course , you won’t be disappointed

Etching hill has a stricter dress code than the other local pay and play courses we have played at which wasn’t a problem for us but its something to be aware of. Its layout and facilities looked great it provides players with the options of a par 3 academy course, a 9 hole course called the valley which is more challenging and a full 18 hole course called the leas, a driving range, a short game pitching area with bunkers and a 9-hole putting green.

Still being relatively new to playing golf (less than a year) we had only played at local 9 hole courses that were good for beginners so we decided to cash in on the great weather and take full advantage of playing the leas course. It was very challenging but enjoyable it comprises of five par 3’s, ten par 4’s and three par 5’s. It takes about 5 hrs to go round and as its situated on the side of a hill be prepared for some steep slopes to walk up and down. We would recommend hiring a golf buggy if your not very fit or have some mobility issues.

The staff were very friendly and I felt at ease when I had an hours coaching which was of great help (thanks Sophie). The only let down other than the scores we posted was that unlike other courses that we have played at the course card doesn’t show the course layout and no helpful information is displaced at the tee off area other than par and distance.

We really had no idea where to aim for having never played the course and as the vast majority of holes you cannot see the flag from the tee we felt that this could be an area to improve especially as its pay and play course not just members and by invite only. Luckily for us we met some members that were having a competition and they were very friendly and helpful giving us advice of local knowledge into how the course plays and where to go.

Extremely well organised from start to finish by Carole at Pentland golf.An excellent full English breakfast was served followed by 18 holes on a very well kept golf course. Our society brought 29 golfers and the package rate was well worth it.
I would highly recommend this testing and tricky golf course.
Well done to all involved 10/10

Many thanks

Driving Range
Aug 2016
Attended the driving range and was really impressed with the overall layout of the golf club however this all changed when I spoke to a rude young man on the desk this disappointment was then followed by the discovery of the absolutely diabolical clubs provided to me and my company.

We met friends after a game of golf and had a lovely meal in the bar. They had a good selection of food on the menu, so there was something for everyone. We had very good service from Sam.

Lovely Occasion
Nov 2015 • Friends
We visited the Golf Club to attend a Celebration Memorial event which was very tastefully done. There were a lot of people present but the staff did a good job of looking after guests, drinks etc. The lunch was buffet style and beautifully presented, tasty and plentiful. The family were all pleased with the way the event was handled and it was as nice an occasion as it possibly could be.
